Rustad Says Endako Shut Down Very Upsetting

Thursday, December 11, 2014 @ 10:31 AM

Fraser Lake, B.C. -Minister of Aboriginal Relations John Rustad, whose constituency encompasses the Endako Mine near Fraser Lake, says he will meet with the Mayors and Members of the Regional District today with a view to discussing what the Provincial government can do in the closure of Endako Mines, near Fraser Lake.

Rustad says , the mine closing is very upsetting for all of the communities in the region  “It is not just Moly prices , but oil and other commodity prices that are in the tank”. ‘ The good news with respect to Endako is that the company is not permanently  moth balling the mine , but rather shutting down until such time as the price of the product improves.

Rustad says  there may be some time to  ease the pinch “We have a 60 day period in which we can put in place some stop gap measures. I will be meeting with other ministers in government to see how we may help the affected communities.”

Thompson Creek Metals announced yesterday  that the mine will suspend operations .

The company employees about 450 at the Endako Mine which is  just outside of  Fraser Lake..

The company says  about 50% of the  salaried workers  at the  Endako Mine will be  terminated resulting in a severance package of about $1.7 million dollars .

The hourly employees have been notified  their employment will be “temporarily suspended in 60 days and will remain so  suspended  while the Mine is on temporary suspension.”   It means  about 300 hourly workers,  members of the USW Local 1-424,  will  be off the job in early February.

These are people that processed 60,000 tons of rock a day. Let’s put them to work four laning PG to Vanderhoof while we have the available work force to do the job. Also if LNG wants to build pipelines criss crossing our province then let’s require them to source their pipe for those projects in BC thereby creating the demand again from Endako.

Sounds like John’s on top of this. Good to see.

Eagleone so you would be okay being forced to only buy from one store?

I say Rustad is very upsetting.

No I would not Seamut. My shopping is not the same as a company that wishes to make billions off of a provincial resource. Look at the Americans and their buy America for the prince Rupert port… how is requiring some made in BC pipe any different?

I agree Oldun. Rustad is shocked because he has no idea what the major industries are doing in his riding because he is too busy being a MLA. He should know the major employers and the markets that move them… be anticipating at all times events that could involve his constituents. Rustad has been asleep at the wheel most of the last 10-years IMO.
