Prince George, B.C. – While the Delta Hotel project sits idle,  there are  plans for two more hotel developments in the City of Prince George.Prince George City Council has given  first two readings to two rezoning applications that would see  new hotel projects  developed at, or near, the  junction of highways 16 and 97.

On the west side of Highway 16, just south of the P.G. Playhouse,  the  Pomeroy  Group plans to build two  four storey hotel buildings that would be joined  by a pool and fitness facility. This  complex would provide 243 rooms.

Across the Highway, at the corner where the  Prince George Visitors centre used to stand,  the Treasure Cove  people  hope to add another hotel  to their  property.    That facility would  be a 6 storey 84 room  hotel.

For the Pomeroy Hotel project, access will  be from Rec Place Drive.  Councillor Murry Krause  called for improved lighting and signage “It’s very confusing, people don’t know how to get to the Prince George Playhouse,  or  the Golf and Curling Club.”

Right now,  the access to the  Golf and Curling Club and Rollerdome is a  gravel access with  no traffic control signs leading into and out of the parking lot.

Director of Planning, Ian Wells says the  road will be built to city stands with proper curbs, lighting and signage.

Would be a good time to widen both highways in this area, and make the developers pay for the upgrades.

What the hell is happening to the pile of concrete and rusting rebar by the library? I see they have put up a plywood wall around it? A new canvass for graffiti artists?

Sounds like the delta is done. Put a fork in it. I wonder if these two developments were waiting for a new mayor and council? The timing seems odd. The last crew were only in support of downtown development. Now we can hopefully have a more well rounded approach. By favouring one area over another it just scares developers away.

Awesome news! Pomeroy, that rich man from Alberta staking out central BC now! Lol about time he moved out of the Peace and Grande Prairie and builds something real in PG. We need this and it’s too bad it’s late for winter games but oh well the area will finally look nice!

Good. Run that joke of a Signature Sandman out of business.

It’s always good to hear of a new project attaining the city’s approval. Now if they would get the former roller dome’s owners to spruce up that building we would have a great looking intersection.

I already have more faith that this is going to happen over any point in time hearing about the Delta project.

Now if they would get the former roller dome’s owners to spruce up that building we would have a great looking intersection.

I cringe every time I go near that building and read the Asbestos warnings on the outside. It would probably cost a fortune to do any sort of renovations to that place.

Pomeroy opening the Tony Romas downtown, and we all know how long that lasted…..

Yea well Pomeroy in Fort St. John also had a Tony Roma’s and it shut down as well so don’t go blame a hotel chain for dismal crap service of Tony Roma’s since it’s a chain on its own. A bad one at that. USA companies don’t do well in Canada.

Hotels and Restaurants are a completely different game. Don’t get into the restaurant biz unless you can afford a fast food chain.

Pomeroy group owned the rights to Tony Romas in Northern BC and Alberta they ran them.

I have to wonder why all of a sudden there is the demand for all these additional rooms?

@Hindsight: A lack of decent hotel rooms has hurt us for hosting bigger events and conferences. PG has lagged far behind similar sized cities in this regard.

Congrats to the Pomeroy group , they are smart buisness people , maybe the reason why Tony Roma’s didn’t work was because it was down town . I spent lots of time at the one in Grande Prairie and it was an excellent resturant . And if US companies don’t do well in Canada they sure are doing well with Canadaians crossing the boarder to shop etc. At least the hotel won’t be going down town a very smart move.

I love all the people on here that spout off about things they have no idea about. “Sounds like the Delta is done” Are those the sounds you make up in your head? If you had any idea how hotels finance their developements you would know why this project is stalled.

Tony Romas shut down during the peak of the recession not due to lack of business in PG or FSJ or any of the other 15 locations. It was corperate downsizing. Ever been to Tony Roma’s in FSJ before it closed? Try and get a seat in there on a Tues and say that it wasn’t a profitable business.

THis is good news for our City, Pomeroy group betting millions that PG will grow . . .

Gee now I’ll have a place top stay when I visit George.
Cheers

Hey superdave,
I wake you from your coma when the delta is complete. Until then, the proof is at the construction site.

superdave – I went to Tony Roma’s twice here and never went back. First time horrible service and horrible food. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and went back a couple months later. Same thing. Never went back. Good restaurants will generally survive a recession, this place was anything but.

Superdave. I’m generally a pretty optimistic person but I literally cannot fathom that the Delta project is not totally done and written off.

Since you have extensive knowledge in the area of hotel financing, can you share why you feel that the Delta will still be built? Why is the City already getting legal contingencies (due to no progress on the hotel) in place?

I really, really, want the Delta to be built–it would be a great benefit to the downtown. That said, logic states that it is only a matter of months until the existing concrete foundation that was poured will be demolished.

The roller dome is owned by the City.

Yeah it sounds great, but here’s abother project that won’t benefit the downtown. Couldn’t they take over the Delta site? Maybe you will all disagree with me but I think we’re missing another great opportunity. Why do we pander to developers like Oliver Twist asking “please sir, I’d like some more”?

People seem to forget that the Pomeroy Group were in Prince George some seven or eight years ago, when they attempted to buy the Prince George Golf and Curling Club for some $15 Million. Seems they ran into trouble with City zoning, or with the Golf Course, in any event they decided to scrap the idea.

Then there was a developer from Langley that was going to buy and develop the property, however he hit the road also.

Then we had a local group of contractors/business people who were going to buy the property and develop it, however after working with the City for a while they scrapped that idea.

We now have Pomeroy back with a much smaller project, ie; this hotel, which it appears will be built on the old driving range property owned by the PG Golf Course.

Maybe this time it will go through.

“maybe the reason why Tony Roma’s didn’t work was because it was down town”

===============================

I don’t buy that for a minute. Some of PG’s best restaurants are downtown. For what it’s worth, when I went to the Tona Roma’s in PG it was mediocre. Mediocre food, mediocre service, mediocre everything. Mediocre can do well in a small town, not so much in a place like PG that actually has pretty good dining options for the size of the city.

Didn’t Ricks on George close as well?

Tony Roma’s is garbage. They survive in mall locations because of convenience.

Interesting how short people’s memories are!
Pomeroy walked on the golf course deal due to 1) not being able to get the city to agree to their requirements for land use, density, zoning etc and 2) not being able to raise financing. Based on the personal experience of two clients that got mixed up with Pomeroy, they are not a company that I would ever consider doing any sort of business with unless in involved certified funds and no weasel clauses!
Their operation of the Tony Romas should be a very good indicator of how they run a business.
As for the Roller Dome, it is not owned by the City, it is privately owned by a local contractor. I have it on fairly good authority that it has been sold to a certain pub operator that intends to re-develop the site to commercial use!

To City Hall: Is it possible that the New Mayor, Mr. Wells or the city manager could be so kind and let the public know
the expected completion date (timeline) for the Delta Hotel?
