Prince George, B.C. – The winter solstice was celebrated in Prince George today.

To mark the event a sale was held at The Exploration Place and was followed up by a lantern walk through Fort George Park.

The solstice officially began at 3:03 p.m. which organizer Jovanka Djordjevich said marks a special occasion.

“The solstice is the beginning of winter and in a winter city we should be celebrating that. The whole point of organizing something around solstice is welcoming it and allowing people to understand that we’re actually welcoming back the sun as well.”

Close to 50 people turned out to participate in the lantern walk including youngster Meshach Tarr and his parents Dave and Chrystie.

“It’s the shortest day of the year and it’s all uphill from here,” said Dave Tarr.

250 News asked Chrystie if her family embraces winter to which she replied “we try.”
