Will Veterans Affairs Office Reopen in Prince George?
Prince George, B.C. – Is the door open or closed when it comes to the possible reopening of the Veterans Affairs office in Prince George?
Yesterday Cariboo-Prince George Conservative MP Dick Harris suggested the door was still open during an interview with 250News.
“When it comes to looking after veterans doors are never closed. They never have been. It’s a little known fact that Veterans Affairs never runs out of money if there’s a need. There’s never been an increase in funding that’s been turned down as long as I know and I was on the Veterans Affairs Committee.”
However this morning neighouring Conservative MP Bob Zimmer (Prince George-Peace River) suggested otherwise noting, “I would say yes.”
He adds at the time of the office closure in 2012 two employees were serving just 15 files.
“We thought it would be better to put it into the Service Canada office and house veterans services there.”
Zimmer also spoke with Prince George City Council this week where he also addressed concerns regarding the office closure.
“We had a good chat about it. They addressed their concerns and they’re elected officials as well and I completely understand they’re hearing these issues and I’m committed to whatever those issues are that we’ll resolve them.”

Harper doesn’t care.. IF it does reopen it will just before the next election
Too many people think they are better drivers than they really are or are in too much of a hurry in either case they drive beyond the weather and road conditions way too often
stupid link jumping
2 very well paid government employees!
2 very well paid and extremely underworked (15 files)government employees!
This is just one more excellent example of the inefficiencies that permeate throughout the public sector!
Some would suggest that the Veteran’s Affairs Office should be re-opened in Prince George. After all, there are 15 files to service and having a local office seems paramount to those suggesting, nay dare I say demanding the re-opening of the Veteran’s Affairs Office.
As I enjoy playing the Devil’s advocate, may I suggest that if 5 of the files are from Prince George and 5 are from the Peace River/Fort Nelson area, and the remaining 5 are located along Highway 16 to Prince Rupert, then perhaps we need 3 separate and more local offices, rather than 1 here in Prince George?!?!
Or, or, or we can consolidate the services of the Veteran’s Affairs Office with the existing Services Canada Office and we can train those staff members so that they are able to deal with the 15 files!
Wait a minute! Isn’t that what the Government has done, or is trying to do already??
If the existing Services Canada Office is like any other government office or department, there are probably a lot of staff doing very little, so 15 extra files and some more training shouldn’t be a huge burden on the existing staff!! With adequate training, they should be able to provide all of the services of the former and separate Veterans Affairs Office! There will undoubtedly be some learning curve and a few hiccups along the way, but surely this solution makes more sense than an office with 2 employees looking after 15 files!
….and if the office is re-opened, how do I apply for one of the two jobs??
Probably through http://www.jobs.gc.ca
Check it out, there are loads of jobs on there that might interest you. You may qualify for some of them and likely not for many of them.
I agree totally Hart Guy. Oh, by the way, I want the other position.
“He adds at the time of the office closure in 2012 two employees were serving just 15 files.”
No wonder it was closed. Clearly it was not being used much. Of ocurse it makes sense to consolidate the services, but I know some will oppose such a move.
I don’t get it. The physical office may have closed but it sounds like you can still access the services through the downtown federal office. Does having a dedicated building somehow imply better service?
What did Zimmer actually say? And most of you don’t even know what the issues are your just trying to impress us with your knowledge that is completely lacks any knowledge of the problem.
As a veteran I tried, to explain in yesterday post what really has happened in the past. Not any of you are veterans so dry up.
Cheers
So let’s see how this works. I walk in to Service Canada office and wish to speak to someone in Veterans Affairs. The receptionist points to one of the phones and says the directories over there, just give them a call.
You call, and then start to burn with the “Press 7 for disability claims”,
press 22 for the Minister”, etc., ad nauseum….
How hard can it be to have one of the invisible bureaucrats behind the wall trained up on the tasks so that a veteran can sit down and have a face to face with a real person and at least FEEL like he or she is being listened to?
As retired said he did not have to use the office. Most enquiries can be done over the phone. I also understand a veterans affairs official makes regular visits into town.
Maybe Harris and Zimmerman can better explain what is available now. Seems to be much confusion.
Hart guy, what would they get paid ? Since you seem to know why not toss in some facts for a change.
@P Val. With the Feds that would easily be a $50K a year job, plus benefits. I respect our Vets, but for their own best interests, they have to understand that you cannot operate an office that only serves 15ish files. Total operating costs would be well over a quarter million a year to operate a service like that.
Summit.. That’s a guess.. Not any fact.. How do you know how many files they run? So you also know the rent of an office.
You seem to know everything except for facts..but don’t let that stop you, hart guy certainly doesn’t..lol
Ok P Val, so you’re the expert on facts tonight, are you??
Facts? If you’ve paid attention in the past, you will have noticed that on many, many occasions I have provided facts! Sometimes, I just offer my opinion!
But let’s look at facts! In your first comment, you state that “Harper doesn’t care”! Is that a fact, or is that your opinion?
I see Harper as someone who obviously care, at least more than either you or I do! That’s quite obvious to me as I see a man who has put his money where his mouth is, a man who has stood up for what he believes in, stood up by putting his name on a ballot many times and has been successful many times! I see a man who has obtained a Master Degree in Economics! I see a man who has risen to the occasion and has been successful in politics, time and time again! Those are facts!
So, you state that “Harper doesn’t care”! In my opinion, he cares a lot more than you or I do. Perhaps he sees the “bigger picture” to a greater degree than you or I do??
Closing offices that are underutilized might be seen as under the category of “seeing things in the bigger picture”, but that might be beyond your scope of vision!
I am sure that with your perfect vision, you see Mulcair (gag) or Trudeau (puke) as the saviour of all things important to you! That would be a case of the blind, leading the blind! That would be my opinion!
The same people that want the Veteran’s Office kept open (that isn’t used much) are the same people complaining that their taxes are too high. The sad part is that they don’t see the connection.
It’s a fact, Harper has cut coast guard coverage..he has cut back medical to seniors, he has cut back provincial transfer rates, cut back benefits for veterans, healthcare for military, he pushes his religious beliefs on us, his government puts out false adds about marijuana. All facts.
P Val, the fact is that far too many Governments, at all levels in our country have, for far too long, given in to the demands of the populace. We want this, the Government gives it to us! We want that, the Government gives it to us! We want both this and that, and the Government gives both this and that to us!!
In order to give us this and that, the Government (at all levels) has raised taxes and created a bureaucracy of immense proportions! Don’t believe me?? Take a drive or walk through downtown PG! It’s nothing more than Government office after Government agency after Government office after Government agency!!
P Val, who the heck do you think pays for all of that?
We are pissing away far too much money on stupid useless programs and the staff to support them and all of this leaves us with far too little for programs that are actually valuable! Perhaps a local Veteran’s Affairs Office should be maintained here, but what superfluous Government program should get axed instead? Surely you can come up with a couple, P Val!!
Or is that beyond your scope of vision, P Val??
P Val, I’m absolutely positive that you wouldn’t support the elimination of any useless Government programs, as that would result in the loss of the equally useless Government “Union” jobs that the program has created.
In my “opinion”, that’s a fact!!
I can come up with one really easy, the fed’s “Economic Action Plan.” There is no plan, it’s simply millions and millions of dollars of slick advertising getting you to believe there is an “action plan.” It is done solely to get you to think the current government is looking after our economy. If you’re concerned about government spending Hart Guy, you should be all over Zimmer, Harris et al about this complete waste of money. Are you?
Blah, blah, blah and it goes on.
Chheers
Hart guy, again just more ramblings from you with no facts.” To many governments at all levels”. Way to be precise..lol
Fate, I AM all over Zimmer, Harris, Harper, Clark, Morris, Bond, Green, et al over many many complete wastes of money! I have always steadfastly maintained that we are long overdue for a complete review and rationalization of our Government, at all levels, and the services that it provides!! Some would rather leave things the way that they are or have become. I don’t have a problem rocking the boat!
P Val, you’re just mad at the world because you had to pay the difference to upgrade to the deluxe hip! Having the deluxe version still won’t make you “hip”! Sorry!
Retired 02, haven’t heard anything even semi-intelligent from you in a while, like forever! Off your meds?
