Suspect in St. Albert Police Shooting Found Dead
Prince George, B.C. – RCMP in Edmonton say the suspect in this morning’s shooting of two police officers at a casino in St. Albert, just northwest of Edmonton, has been found dead.
Assistant Commissioner Marlin Degrand says police involved in a sizeable manhunt for the shooting suspect had tracked the man to a residence in St. Albert, but when they entered that home the suspect was dead. Degrand says police did not fire any shots at that location and the man was not killed by police officers. They say the man had forced his way into the unoccupied house. Assistant Commissioner Degrand says the suspect was known to police, but his identity is not being released at this time. It is believed that no one else was involved in the incident.
Meantime the two officers who were shot this morning remain in hospital, and one of them suffered a wound that has put his survival at stake. 42-year-old Constable David Wynn is still listed in very grave condition. 49-year-old Auxiliary Constable Derek Bond remains in serious condition.
At about 3 MT this morning the two officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a casino in St. Albert. When they entered the casino they were shot. Degrand says two shots were fired at the officers, and they did not return fire. Security cameras in the casino recorded video which has been seized by investigators and is now being examined.
A ground and helicopter search of the St. Albert area led police to the residence in which the dead suspect was found.
