Committees and Hearings Highlight Council Meeting
Prince George, B.C. –There are two new committees being proposed for the City of Prince George, and both are tightly tied to Mayor Lyn Hall’s past.
Before entering the world of Municipal politics, Mayor Hall was the Chair of the Board of Education for School District 57.
During his Mayoral campaign, Hall promised better links with youth, and connecting with students is a critical step towards achieving that goal.
Council will be asked to approve the setting up of a “select committee on education” which will invite reps from UNBC, CNC and School District 57 to be members.
A “select committee on students needs” would seek representation from student groups from each of the three education providers in the community.
Both committees are aimed at strengthening communication and collaboration between the City and the educational partners in the community. In the case of students, the stated goal is to “build capacity within the region for students through the identification of student needs and priorities.”
The committee selection is one of the items on the regular agenda for Prince George City Council this evening. There is also a call for reps to be selected for a number of existing committees:
- Select Committee on Prince George’s 100th Anniversary Celebration
- Select Committee on Homelessness and Affordable Housing
- Omenica Beetle Action Coalition until the 2018 general local election.
- Prince George Treaty Advisory Committee until the 2018 general local election.
Also on the agenda, a request to have the Prince George Community Foundation Park placed in the care of the Community Foundation.
There are three development variance permit requests before Council and one request for support to change the terms of the liquor license of the Carmel Restaurant (adding patron participation) .
There is one formal public hearing, it is a request to close the proposed road dedication on a piece of property on P.G. Pulpmill Road.

Does anyone know what the road dedication is all about?
It sounds like maybe there needs to be a select committee for the sole purpose of selecting committees.
Or is that what city council basically has become?
maybe we need a study to study if we really needed these committees…
isn’t the reason people get into politics to see that their special interests get “help” and their friends do to?
Don’t you sky falling posters ever have a positive thing to say? becomes a bore to read.
If the comments bother you so much, 8, there’s always the option of not reading them. Just sayin’.
Our city tax dollars should not be going to homelessness. That is a provincial responsibility.
the provincial governments responsibility, like they care about housing and homelessness in prince George!
If you want to waste time as a group then form a committee, also gives you someone to blame, and of course if the committee is successful then you can take credit.. Looks like hall is lining up his defense already .
Johnny, how could he bellyache about the bellyach’in if he didn’t read it??
Glad to see there’s no mention of a PAC yet. Oh, crap, just had to tell myself to shut up already!
“Student needs” aren’t really part of the municipal government’s mandate so why spend any time or money on them? If they want to engage with the youth they need to focus on the non-school related needs.
