Council Melts Idea of Giant Snowman
Prince George, B.C. – City Council and Staff at the City of Prince George won’t support the idea of a giant snowman being built in the City as part of the Canada Winter Games.
The idea has been floating around on various websites in the city, and was the topic of discussion on the CBC this morning. But, before anyone starts building a giant `Frosty`or `Olaf`, Mayor Hall says there are some serious issues to be considered.
“There is a liability issue” says Mayor Lyn Hall who adds. “The liability issue is of great concern to the City”.
Manager of Legislative Services , Walter Babicz outlined some of the issues which include: dangers posed by people climbing what would be a very large structure, and the need to have WorkSafe BC involved while the snowman was being built.
Director of Public Works, Bill Gaal says there is also a concern about the stability of a giant sized snowman, “If it fell over and people were under it, there could be serious injuries.”
Still, Councillor Brian Skakun and Mayor Hall welcomed the suggestion of the giant snowman, and encouraged residents to continue to come forward with creative ideas to celebrate the City and the events scheduled for 2015.

I guess a fence with a sign surrounding the structure which states “anyone past this point will be prosecuted” is out of the question.
Maybe they should submit a proposal to create 100,000 pint sized snowmen instead. I wonder if they would require building permits?
Sounds about right. If somebody got hurt around or near that thing, they’d sue the City in a heartbeat.
So how come no one has sued over the condition of our roads over the last how many years?
It’s just a snowman! Quebec can build freaking ice hotels that people stay I’m sure we could build a safe snowman.
People say Vancouver is the no fun city!Prince George may have to take over that distinction if city hall continues to turn down every idea for entertainment and fun for the citizens of our community.
…and what? Make the stupid thing out of snowdump snow? It would look like sh&t.
Considering the fact that nobody had time for the Festival of Lights this year because of the prep for canada winter games, why is there now time and resources to be wasted on something so meaningless. Dumb idea.
This is what society has come to. We have to worry about the “intelligently challenged” ones from being hurt. Because people make stupid decisions that get themselves hurt we stop others from having good, clean fun . Not allowed to hold people responsible for their actions anymore, someone else is always to blame. The lawyers love this, they have made everything into a possible lawsuit..
but the mayor and council could pose for a picture with it?
NoWay: “So how come no one has sued over the condition of our roads over the last how many years? ”
Hard to sue when you’re driving too fast for the conditions to begin with.
NoWay: “It’s just a snowman! Quebec can build freaking ice hotels that people stay I’m sure we could build a safe snowman.”
I’m sure the organizers of sandblast feel the same way. Maybe we could get everyone who comes within 500 ft. to sign a waiver? ;-)
This sounds like my strata council talking. Focused on legal shit instead of the broader perspective of it.
DPJ: Exactly! Strata councils, aren’t THEY fun!
This will be the newly elected council’s direction for the next 4 years. Overthinking, studies, consultations… all for a snow man… just wait till they need to decide over a possible rezoning.
I bet that an engineer approves the construction of those Québec ice hotels to make sure they are safe and that they have to get building permits. I too dislike over-regulation and the loss of the notion of assumption of risk, but there are real safety and legal issues with large structures.
It is easier to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission. Just sayin’.
Liability issues…the biggest cop out on the planet.

Liability issues…the biggest cop out on the planet.
Exactly, easy way out of an issue that makes someone feel uncomfortable.
metalman.
Well if that’s the case, it should be an easy task to find someone to sign a document stating that they accept full reponsibility and liability for such a structure. Any volunteers? Hello? Where did everybody go?
God hates cowards! were is the pen?
@johnnyBelt
Just as you were typing that it looks like Central Builders have taken the “risk”. Guess it wasn’t that hard after all. Oh and now Central gets to put their logo on it!
I had heard this earlier in the morning. It’s great that private business has stepped up. That takes taxpayers off the hook from a liability standpoint.
A snowman in every yard would make PG look like a great family town.
I am waiting for mayor and council to get a committee of snowmen together to discuss concerns about this …lol
