Silvertips 6 – Cougars 1

Tuesday, January 20, 2015 @ 11:00 PM

Tuesday night in Prince George the Cougars dropped a 6-1 score to the visiting Everett Silvertips. Kohl Bauml led the way offensively for Everett with two goals while Cole MacDonald added two assists. Chase Witala had the lone Cougar goal which came late in the third period, spoiling the shutout bid of Everett goaltender Austin Lotz.

After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes, the Silvertips were given a five-minute major power play when Cougars captain Sam Ruopp collided knee-on-knee with Everett defenceman Jordan Wharrie. Ruopp was ejected from the game and assessed a five-minute major penalty and the Silvertips took advantage.

Ivan Nikolishin opened the scoring for Everett at 14:10 of the first on a shot from the high slot.

Everett increased their lead to 2-0 at the 5:47 mark of the second period when captain Kohl  Bauml pounced on a Cole MacDonald rebound and was able to sneak it past goaltender Patrick Gora and in. For Bauml it was his 20th of the season and his first of two goals on the night.

Carson Stadnyk would add a late second period marker for Everett at 17:58 to give the visitors a 3-0 lead after two.

Graham Millar made it 4-0 for Everett on a breakaway goal at 5:04 of the third period. Millar left the penalty box, took a long stretch pass from  Ben Betker and raced in alone on Gora before beating him with a backhand shot.

Kohl Bauml then notched his second of the game five minutes later on a power play to move the Everett lead to 5-0.

Chase Witala got the Cougars on the board with his team leading 25th of the season at the 13:45 mark of the third. Tate Olson started the play with a low wrist shot from the slot. David Soltes’ rebound attempt was denied but Witala crashed the net hard and tucked it home to end Austin Lotz’ shutout bid.

Remi Laurencelle added a late one for the Silvertips to solidify their victory. Everett outshot Prince George 33-27.

The Cougars record now sits at 20-25-1-1. They still hold a two point lead on Vancouver for third in the B.C. Division and will look to get back on winning terms tomorrow night in their rematch with Everett.
