Busy Construction Year in Prince George
Prince George, B.C.- 2014 was a very good year in Prince George when it comes to permits for building or renovations.
There were 509 permits issued last year, compared to 487 in 2013. The value is up as well. Last year, the total value of building permits was about $125.7 million dollars. In 2013 the total value was $116.25 million, and in 2012 it was about $116.4 million.
The largest increase in permits ( both in numbers and value) is in the area of single family dwellings. Last year, there were 126 permits issued for single family homes with a value of just over $35 million. In 2013, there were 91 single family home permits valued at $24.9 million while in 2012 there were 116 Single family dwelling permits valued at $29.1 million issued.
The full report will be presented to Prince George City Council this evening.

And yet Fort St John beat out PG as the city with the highest amount of construction in Northern BC last year with about a quarter of the population of PG.
Mining is down big in the region with thousands of jobs gone in the last 6-months alone. Forestry is about to see a big cut to the annual allowable cut… might even see a moth balling of Intercon and another saw mill as a result.
They say LNG will be the big savior for our economy now, but we hear the most likely project to go ahead will be built off shore and be located on a barge that doesn’t even have to pay property taxes. Fat chance PG will get jobs for any plants that are 800km away off shore… if we were truly the Northern capital we would have head office jobs for LNG in PG, but that’s not the case here.
So one can hope PG can really sell itself during the winter games as a great place to live with a high quality of life, so as to maybe catch some of the retirement market or something… maybe position ourselves as a larger retail center?
I just heard on the radio that the government workers are getting yet another new office building downtown.
What building are you talking about JohnnyBelt? The new BCGEU building? Are you speaking about Federal or Provincial?
Why do you say the plants will be 800 k off shore? No gas drilling out there. Do you have information on fees that will or will not be charged?
Yea Johnny,
are you referring to the BCGEU building? If you are, then yes, and it is gonna look really nice when it is done! the Revival is real!
+Wonder how long this boom will last with the Tar Sands going into a big slump
Speaking of ugly horrible buildings downtown that need to be cleaned up, I think that Photofax should be embarrassed. The building is literally falling apart and they’re doing nothing to try and keep it maintained. I’d never do business with Photofax purely because they’re too lazy to care about making their building look good. Heck, the stripper’s on 4th has even cleaned up their building a bit.
Summit,
I completely agree with you. Right next door to a beautiful new building makes them look even worse.
Very frustrating, especially with the extra money available right now for exterior renovations.

It’s not the government workers that are getting it, it’s their union.
Right axman, the BCGEU.
Eagleone: “so as to maybe catch some of the retirement market or something… maybe position ourselves as a larger retail centre?”
Many people that I know have already left or are thinking of leaving when it comes to retirement. Many who retire will downsize and unfortunately PG is building very large homes that are not for seniors. It will cost a lot more to set these large houses up for seniors.
Many of the young ones of the families have moved away, and the seniors are having a harder time with the outdoor chores etc. The winters are not the best for seniors in this town.
Until this city or developers start looking at the houses that are being built they will loose much of the senior market . Just my opinion.
Eagleone, Let’s see what FSJ does in terms of building this year!
The nice thing about PG is that since the mid 90’s great efforts have been made to diversify our economy so that we don’t boom and bust on the fortunes of ONE industry! Oil and Gas going soft isn’t going to hurt us, but it’s going to kill FSJ, Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie etc.
As for retiring in PG or elsewhere, I know that I won’t be able to afford to retire down south in either the lower mainland or the Okanagon and still maintain my lifestyle that i enjoy today, so I am going to retire right here in PG.
When I retire I won’t be looking for a smaller home that will still require upkeep, yard maintenance, snow removal etc., I’ll be looking for a nice condo, or townhouse, in an upscale development with some better than average finishing touches. A place that will allow me to lock the door and leave for a month or two in the winter without having to worry about security, and maintenance.
I would suggest to you that a lot of seniors are looking for the same thing, as evidenced by the new Condo building on Guest Crescent that was built by Myotovic construction. The prices in that building average well over $300K with some in the $500K range, and it is almost sold out!
In closing let’s try NOT to knock PG at every opportunity!
Nytehawwk FTW!
