Hart Highlands, Grants, and Rezoning Applications All on Council’s Plate
Prince George, B.C.- The second phase of the Hart Highlands Sewer installation project is a matter on the agenda for Prince George City Council this evening.
Staff advise they will be holding a meeting on the evening of Thursday February 5th to talk with residents about the second phase of the project,. Staff say they will be able to provide more information on the project and discuss the matter of grants.
Some people in the neighbourhood have researched grant sources to help ease the cost of the sewer installation, and while there is a grant pool available, staff have advised another project (Fraser Bench rehabilitation) be submitted, saying it is ‘shovel ready’ and many dollar have already been spent on the project.
In addition to the update about a meeting with the Hart Highland residents, there are two letters on the agenda from some concerned residents of that neighbourhood, seeking answers to why this project is not the one being submitted for a grant. There is also a report from staff requesting Council approve the Fraser Bench Outfall remediation project as the one which the City will apply for a grant.
Also on the agenda for this evening’s regular meeting of Council, a formal public hearing on the rezoning of a portion of Prince George Golf and Curling Club lands to clear the way for the development of a Pomeroy Hotel on property south of the Prince George Playhouse. There is also a request to alter the Official Community Plan to allow for the development of a ‘Woody’s RV’ at the corner of Highway 16 West and Bunce Road.

I wonder what is going on with the Sobeys property in the Hart Industrial area. Is that going to be going ahead this year? It would also be nice to see the Hart Mall brought up to standard especially their parking lot area.
As for the ‘phase 2’ in the Hart… you are all screwed. You might have a perfectly good working septic field that would cost less then a $1000 a decade to maintain, but it will cost you upwards of $40,000 by the time its all said and done. At least those on Ridgeview Drive are mostly rich and can afford it will be the argument.
The Fraser River Benchland project may be shovel ready, however the question is. Shovel ready for who??? What’s the hurry on this project??
It will still be shovel ready a few years down the road.
Seems the Cities portion of the money has been carried over from previous budgets and is **surplus funds**,. Hmmmm. One wonders when we need millions of dollars for infrastructure (The biggest problem facing our Municipality) that we would be carrying over some $500,000.00 in surplus funds.
We need to get started on providing the proper water and sewage to residents of this City who do not have these services, but have been paying taxes for years, and hold off on some of the expenses on new residential or industrial projects, or at the very least have the available money split on a percentage basis so all concerned get some of their needs looked after,.
Palopu, This city will not get started on providing the proper water and sewage to residents of this city who do not have these services.
This has been an on going problem since amalgamation. I have been reading up where the over 5.3 million in grants money went from the province. Some of that money took over 10 years to spend and it was not spent in the areas that it was ‘intended for.
This is the reason the Haldi neighbourhood are still looking at their option of leaving the city. Even the money from the roads portion was not used in the area.
The mayor at the time sold these vast areas out when amalgamation was started. Prince George area got the shaft when amalgamation was done by the province compared to how Kamloops and Kelowna were treated at the same time. The province of the day pretty well threatened PG unlike the previous two cities.
Unless this planning department changes it’s thinking the regular citizens of this community will not benefit as the city departments look at what is better for the overall of the city.
I agree with Eagleone – all are screwed.
Eagleone, did you get this $40k figure from the same place you got all your other figures for phase 1?

It cost me less than 20K all said and done. Which by the way is about the cost of a new septic field +/-. My septic field, along with many others, was on its last legs. So no, not all are screwed.
“Ridgeview Drive are mostly rich and can afford it will be the argument.”
Argument from who exactly? Remember, grant or no grant this has to be voted in by majority before it goes ahead.
And where did you get $40K from?
If that neighborhood gets full sewer paid for by the taxpayer then I will certainly be lining up with my hand out for my neighborhood to be done as well. Can’t give it to one without everyone else getting the same. Unless maybe there are some back room deals going on with that group!
