Over 310,000 Students Registered for Parent Subsidy Program

Monday, February 2, 2015 @ 2:14 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The deadline to register for the Temporary Education Support for Parents (TESP) program passed over the weekend.

The provincial government launched the initiative to provide support for parents during last year’s education dispute.

According to the Ministry of Finance over 245,000 families registered, representing a total of over 310,000 students.

The $40 a day subsidy covers 13 missed school days between September 2 to September 18 for a total of $520 for each eligible child (public school students 12 years old and younger) and more than 99% of these cheques have been mailed out to families.

Participation in the program was 98% and in an email the ministry tells 250News the total cost of the program will not be known until all applications have been reviewed and processed.

The government funded the program through labour disruption savings.

$161,000,000 just a drop in the tax payers bucket.

It was a case of:

“We could have paid the teachers to teach their lessons, but instead we paid the parents, to teach the teachers a lesson!”

I think the government was not expecting such a response.

I think they expected this, trying to buy support against teachers.

I don’t like paying taxes so they can be used in this manner. No approval from our household that is for sure.

Jim, when have these liberals ever cared about the voters.

Jim, when have these liberals ever cared about the voters.

I’d say that by not caving to the teacher’s demands they cared a lot more for the voters then a lot of politicians do.

KRUSTY has lots of money for fun and games but nothing for real issues for real people

No, the Liberals cared more about the appearance of winning a fight with the teachers and buying parents support, not voters support. If they cared about all voters, there would’ve been a rebate in school taxes for all of the voters of BC.

Lots of people panned this idea and said they didn’t approve, but it looks like they all signed up for the money. Big surprise.

Some of those people even said they would donate the money to the teacher’s union to support them. Almost nobody did that either. Another big surprise.

The Liberals did what they got the mandate to do, which is taking care of the voters interest and not listening to a small, vocal, overly entitled teacher’s union.

JB, you forgot them looking after seniors too, by raising their medical, increasing deductibles on medication, cutting back on what’s covered in medical, increasing taxes and fees. Yep just what they are mandated to do… Families first.

also instead of the %7 tax krusty promised fron LNG it’s now only %3.5. Yeah the liberals have some mandate alright

PV – Have you forgotten it was the Liberals who won the last Provincial Election? Have you also forgotten that the great Dix ‘had it in the bag’ yet somehow did not get it? Why don’t you just accept the fact that the NDP is a lost cause? Yipee!!!

Did I mention the NDP? Nope… Nuffsnuff, try reading posts before you comment on them, will help stop making you look silly.
