You Did Us Proud Prince George

It was a class act. The opening ceremonies for the Canada Winter Games held at CN Centre showed the country just what we are all about . From the commercials, to the inserts, we all should be proud of what we saw.

The highlight however was Chief Dominic Frederick , of the Lheidli T’enneh, who sat there like a new father watching the tots from his region performing the national anthem in Carrier. Those kids were the highlight, they are the spark that makes us so proud to be a part of this region. Fredrick was honored and you could see it in his face that the Lheidli T’enneh were the First Nation’s host of the Winter Games, a first in Canada.

But let’s not take it away from the other performers, again the kids showed us all that it isn’t necessary to be in tune with the rest , watching the jumbotron, singing when the urge hits you , being out of step is what makes them kids, and we are all so proud of them.

It is a shame that every single resident of this area did not have the opportunity to watch the opening of the games, because nothing instills a feeling of pride more than watching people like Andy Beesley, and  again Jennifer Annais Pighin who designed the team BC scarf, an item I will bet will the one  all participants will want to take home.

You can have slick professional artists doing a professional job , but you simply can’t take the splendour out of watching some young kids and young adults doing what, for many, was their first exposure to the big stage. The latter will win the prize every time .

One Global TV host  described Prince George  as a ‘mill town’  that needed  the Canada  Winter Games. The message from the opening ceremonies was clear,  this is a community   with as diverse  a population  as its economy,  one where  the outdoors and all that  the outdoors can offer,  are embraced.

Above all,   the opening ceremonies  confirmed for the rest of the nation what we who live here already know,  this is a community of ‘doers’, and by God,  when it  comes to the Canada Winter Games, we got it done!

I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s’ opinion.

Right on Ben!
There’s a good write-up in this morning’s Vancouver Sun. I learned a lot of things about what great facilities we have here.

I agree. Watching this on tv made me feel proud to live here in PG! Not sure how many watched it across Canada but I hope they got a sense of what our community is all about.

Oh and just to sneak this in, remember during election time and Zurowski wanted the city population to be around 100,000, well it will be true until March lol. Close enough anyways.

I’m really proud of hosting the games here in PG. And Global couldn’t be more right, we needed this after such a bleak reputation for years. I believe its the beginning of shedding off our old reputation of a “mill town”, to BC’s Northern City.

That said, I’m stunned they had charged nearly $115/ticket for the opening ceremony. I wasn’t that impressed with the caliber of performance for that kind of money. It was embarrassing to see empty seats on tv as well. They missed the price point in my opinion.

Pgjohn – the event was a sellout. Keep in mind the fire marshall still sets the maximim occupancy and all of the athletes were on the floor, hence empty seats in the stands. They pushed the limits on packing people in as it was.
An absolutely fantastic show!
