Highway 97- Lac la Hache Update

Friday, February 20, 2015 @ 11:03 AM

Lac la Hache, B.C.- Highway 97 is now open to single lane alternating traffic about  15 kms north of Lac la Hache. The highway had been closed since 11:30 last night,  when a southbound pick up truck and northbound  tractor trailer unit collided.

Rescue crews were able to extract a female passenger from the pick up truck.  She  was taken to Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The male

driver of the pick up  was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer unit was not injured.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld until the next of kin have been notified.

This is one of those notorious stretches of highways that has seen many fatalities over the years. Tragic loss of life. If road conditions played into this accident I would hope that the Ministry of Transportation will conduct a thorough investigation into the road layout and road maintenance. Lac La Hache to 140 Mile is almost always bad in the winter. Remember how many fatalities the Hixon area seen years ago? It is unfortunate that it takes loss of life to correct known problems in our society.
