HealthCare Rally in P.G. Today
Prince George, B.C. – The BC Government and Services Employees’ Union (BCGEU) and Hospital Employees’ Union (HEU) will rally against healthcare cuts in Prince George this afternoon.
They say today marks the one year anniversary of the end of the Health Accord which will result in $36 billion in Healthcare cuts over a 10 year period.
The BCGEU says in B.C. it means $5 billion less for hospitals and other public facilities and note they’ll be calling on the federal government to negotiate a new 10 year Health Accord with stable and adequate funding with Canada’s provinces and territories.
The rally starts at noon at 15th Avenue and Central Street and will include a speech by BCGEU president Stephanie Smith.
The P.G. rally will be one of 30 taking place across the province.

Thirty-six million in cuts to health while funding an additional year of bombing in the middle east. This has to be the most misaligned set of priorities in the history of Canadian politics.
That’s BILLION Krusty, which makes it even more obscene
Perhaps we should look into being fiscally responsible with the funding already in place instead of demanding more.
One thing that really bothers me is this: I’ve paid into the medical system all my life. Due to good luck and a good lifestyle, I’ve never been a big user of the program. Now I find that to get the procedures and treatments to deal with some health issues (not cosmetic – largely due to aging), I have to endure wait times that are so ridiculously long as to be impractical. The option? – pay for the procedures at a private clinic, and the procedures are often performed by the same physician who is doing them under the public system. So I’m paying twice for the same treatment.
I have yet to hear one good comment about the bloated administration and the governance of our public health system.
The Point here is, Money being spent elsewhere!
Yes Krusty, that is something that always has me scratching my head. The other day I heard the Federal government was giving 5 million to somewhere offshore, and I rushed to the Taxpayer Foundation Website to see the debt clock had disappeared – because I thought – who would borrow money to just give it away to people who aren’t citizens of your country – so, I assumed we’d paid everything off, but no, we are borrowing money to give away outside the country, while tarnfeather can’t get his hip replaced (assumption), and we expect his grandkids to pay the money back with interest. And the irony of it is, most of the people we give this money to, hate us and our decadent western lifestyle. Go figure.

The Point here is, Money being spent elsewhere!
——–
Money is being wasted everywhere. It’s long past time it stopped but no one has the political will to address it.
Being a bit cynical, I suspect that the Unions only concern is for more funding…
…so that more Union members can be hired…..
…so that more Union dues can be collected….
But that would just be me, being cynical!!
There seems to be lots of unhealthy, overweight, inactive and/or chain smoking people working in our healthcare system and in our population in general. Perhaps the Unions and their members should lead by example, showing how a healthier lifestyle can reduce the demands on our healthcare dollars!
More money will NOT fix the problems in our healthcare system! There is lots of money in the system already. We need to ensure that it is being spent in the best possible way. Less and more efficient management, a more production workforce and more pro-active instead of reactive healthcare! We need to take better care of ourselves so that each of us, individually can reduce our demands on the system and the dollars that support the system!
We, as a society, have become fat and lazy! We smoke too much, we eat too much, we eat all of the wrong kinds of foods, we consume too much alcohol, we abuse our bodies with drugs, both legal and illegal, we take no personal responsibility and then we expect Government to wipe our a$$e$ for us, from cradle to grave!
How on earth do we expect to continue to fund a situation like this? There just isn’t enough money on the planet!
Whew! That’s my rant for today!! have to finish wolfing down my fast food lunch so that I have time to go outside for a smoke!!
As a person who recently had my hip replaced I can tell you one thing.. There are not enough nurses on the floors. They are being run ragged. The waiting lists are atrocious, we have people on pain relievers 24/7 waiting for the call to see a surgeon, then another 6 month wait to actually get the procedure done.
Yes you can go and pay for it out of pocket and get it done in two weeks or so.. And yes, by the same surgeon, and you know why..because the government runs the hours of the operating rooms. There are time when the operating rooms are empty..not because there is no one needing an operation, but because our healthcare system won’t pay for it. The government loves it when people pay out of pocket for their own procedure..that way the government can brag about the waiting lists getting shorter. And in return can cut more from medical due to less people needing work.
The gov can give hundreds of millions in tax breaks, etc to big companies but gouge Joe tax payer to cover the losses..it plain stupid.
P Val – Way back in the NDP year 2000 to be exact, I remember a rally where the multiplex was packed (7000 people) to protest the lack of proper healthcare in this region. Do you believe at that time the NDP was giving hundreds of millions of tax breaks to big companies? We seem to know why the Liberals don’t have enough money to properly fund healthcare, but the anti-business anti- business tax break NDP had the very same problem. What was going on in 2000 that we had these problems, economy was actually not too bad back then? Why didn’t the NDP just raise corporate taxes and pay for it all? Interestingly, the election thereafter the NDP was almost wiped out.
Doesn’t seem to matter whose in power, never enough money for healthcare, never enough money for education.
I think you have a point, but 100s of millions, if that really were the number, won’t solve this problem. Hart Guy has nailed it, we don’t take personal responsibility for our health, we just keep assuming the medical system will fix us, and just take a look at the current generation of kids – aka – future diabetics – how are we suppose to afford that. And whose fault is this childhood obesity epidemic – the fast food companies – junk food companies – do parents have any responsibility at all anymore? Only problem, is there waist line isn’t much better.
Good post Hart Guy. Our society has become soft & too dependant. What ever happened to personal incentive? It is almost inconceivable for me to think that amid all the other issues facing us on a daily basis that the Gov’t should somehow be responsible for something as basic (& complex at the same time) as personal health & well being. We are a lazy people. Instead of taking the time to make a healthy meal, we would rather order in or stop at the golden arches. Instead of taking 30 to 60 minutes out of our oh so busy schedule to go for a walk, run or bike ride we would rather sit in front of a tv or computer. There are some cases where there are real underlying health issues but for the most part it is all personal choice. Unfortunately for our society we have slowly been losing the connection between choice & consequence. I would hazard a guess that if our society took more pains to look after ourselves better the deficiencies in our health care funding would reduce dramatically.
Hart Guy and detoe44 nailed it. The other thing is that this whole “controversy” is a complete lie being pushed forward by the public sector unions. There is absolutely no cut to the federal health care transfer being instituted. The rate of INCREASE in the annual transfer will potentially slow in 2017. It is currently set at 6% annually but will change to the percentage increase in nominal GDP (or 3%, whichever is greater)in 2017. It is one thing to debate the merits of any public policy change, but let’s at least start the discussion with facts, not union talking points.
There havent been healthcare cuts since we formed govt in 2006 period. 6% per year increases are exactly that, increases. Check the facts folks.
The changes coming are moving to a 3% increase minimum and the potential increase based on rates of gdp. We have to backstop on gdp if the economy changes as the money has to come from somewhere. If we didnt manage increases based on gdp eventually 100% of revenues would go to health care leaving no $$ for anything else. However a 3% min increase is exactly that…an increase. 36 billion in cuts, is simply not the case.
Unbelievable the BS and lies the unions spew. Whats worse is the amount of people that continually buy it.
Dow7501.. Why are there unions…because of lousy management. Who is the health care workers management..the liberal government..the ultimate in lousy management.. We all know you hate unions..but blame horrible management for workers needing a union for protection.
Zimmer.. lol..like we trust anything you spew.. Just keep spin doctoring away.
