City Council to Go Forward with Masich Place Grant Application
Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George will file a grant application for Masich Place Stadium upgrades.
Last night Council unanimously approved an application for $3.45 million from a $28.5 million fund created by the Union of B.C. Municipalities to provide money for projects outside of the Lower Mainland.
If granted, the money would go towards a variety of upgrades at the aging multi-sport stadium, along with the development of a synthetic turf field.
According to a staff report, the upgrades will provide an opportunity for the stadium to host major provincial and national tournaments in the future.
Though Councillor Brian Skakun supported the application, he questioned why it came up at the “11th hour.”
“I wish we could have been given more of a heads up,” adding he was relieved to learn if successful, a new design concept will be debated in the community (the city only learned about the grant opportunity during the past couple of months).
Other councillors were more enthusiastic.
“It’s a great proposal,” said Councillor Albert Koehler. “I don’t know why anyone would vote against it. I hope it’s successful.”
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the city and for the region,” added Mayor Lyn Hall.

was there ever any doubt?
Hopefully they get the grant money and fix up the fields. The infield at the stadium is embarrassing and the fields beside the stadium that belong to PGSS are more like pastures than sports fields.
If we want to grow as a community will need to continue to invest in facilities like this that enhance the opportunities for our youth. People can work and live just about anywhere these days and if you want to attract and more importantly keep young families you have to have amenities like the one they are talking about.
Kamloops is light years ahead of PG for summer and field sports both with their track at TRU and the soccer fields at MacArthur Island but this investment would help us catch up a bit.
Good luck. Looking forward to watching University Soccer at a real stadium.
