Kayaker Located …He’s Safe
Prince George, B.C. – The search for an overdue kayaker has been called off, as the missing 25 year old man made his way home on his own.
Just after 1:30 this morning, Prince George RCMP received a report of an overdue kayaker along the Salmon River, north of Prince George.
Police learned that a 25 year old male with little experience kayaking, was dropped off approximately 20 kilometres up the Salmon River from Highway 97 at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday night. The kayaker’s vehicle was located by the Salmon River Bridge, where he intended on finishing his journey.
Prince George Search & Rescue Society started serch efforts at first light this morning, but soon learned the man had returned home.
Seems shortly after starting his kayaking journey in his open hull kayak, he fell into the river due to the fast current. His cell phone went into the river with him. After not being able to locate his vehicle, he walked all night to his residence.
Police would like to remind the public that area rivers are very fast moving with strong currents, especially this time of year. Even experienced outdoor enthusiasts should exercise extreme caution when enjoying our rivers.

Good news. I didn’t expect this to have a positive outcome.
Thank goodness that this person survived his own stupidity. Why on earth would someone with little experience decide to go kayaking at 5:30 at night on a fast moving river on their own. I am glad to hear the person had a good outcome and I hope that the long walk home provided some time to think about the what ifs.
It took me 16hrs to cover 10k on the salmon river. Lots of log jambs on that river.
duh
That’s a dangerous river, for a rookie, with all the log jams.
And why such a late start anyway? 5:30 pm thats less than 4 hours before sundown. Still, glad he made it out safe.
Hope he thinks to personally thank the volunteers who went out.
metalman.
All rivers are very dangerous right now because of high water. Please listen to the older experienced river users. A lot of them won’t go on rivers, especially the smaller ones, at this time of year and for good reason.
The willow, salmon, bowron and cottonwood river, are extremely dangerous this time of year. No one should be allowed on these rivers when the water level is elevated.
