Council to Consider Renaming Fort George Park
Prince George, B.C.- When Prince George City Council meets on Monday June 15th, it will consider a recommendation which calls for Fort George Park to be renamed Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. The recommendation comes from Councillor Murry Krause who writes that since this is the City’s 100th anniversary, there is an opportunity to “acknowledge historic wrongs that have profoundly impacted generations of Lheidli T’enneh” .
Krause is calling upon Council to consider renaming Ft. George Park to commemorate when the Lheidli T’enneh were forced from the area and relocated to Shelley. He points out the Lheidli T’enneh Burial Grounds are within the park and are all that is left of the Lheidli T’enneh village that was destroyed in 1913.
Krause also calls on Council to have the Lheidli T’enneh flag fly permanently on one of the flag poles in front of City Hall serving to recognize the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation as a level of government and that this is their traditional territory.
