Beware Left-Lane Hogs

Saturday, June 13, 2015 @ 7:45 AM

Prince George, B.C. – As Transportation Minister Todd Stone promised 250 News in March (see story here), the provincial government is officially cracking down on “left-lane hogs.”

Starting yesterday, new regulations came into effect “that will clarify rules regarding travelling in the left lane,” reads a government news release.

From now on, motorists travelling highways where the speed is more than 80 km per hour must stay to the right unless they are:

*Overtaking and passing another vehicle
*Moving left to allow traffic to merge
*Preparing for a left hand turn
*Moving left to pass an official vehicle displaying a flashing light

Drivers that don’t abide by the rules face a $167 fine and three penalty points.

The legislation also allows the ministry to define winter tires, studded tires and traction devices such as chains in regulation.

More than 80km per hour – I guess that means we will continue to see the left lane hogs on the Hart Highway.

if there is a left lane hog on the hart doing less than the speed limit of 70km/hr just go around him on the right.

what’s the issue?

I see allot of disputed tickets and don’t see too many of those tickets standing up in court. That law doesn’t affect PG anyways.

I followed a left lane hog, both of them where blocking off a ambulance all the way up the hart. The ambulance finally got by these jerks at race trac gas. He almost sideswiped the left lane hog trying to get around them. I wonder what this maneuver is call when you block both lanes off.

Looks like some one was totally wrong and owes Princegeorge an apology .

sounds like stunting and speeding if this guy wasn’t letting the ambulance get by. I assume the ambulance was accelerating and im sure the speeds were in excess of 70km/ hr

also if you followed these vehicles al the way up the hart you must have been speeding.

Coming down Hywy 97 from the Hart, there ARE signs that state “”keep right except to pass””

The ambulance was not speeding how could it, it was doing 60k all the way up there. the left lane hog turned up west Austin. I had pulled over to let the ambulance by

with that info.. the ambulance driver was not in a hurry so he should have slowed down and let the left lane hog go ahead, instead of almost causing an accident by cutting him off.

the left lane hog was wrong of course but the ambulance driver should have distanced himself from the left lane hog. instead he chose to drive beside the hog and then force himself ahead of the hog. Poor judgement by the ambulance driver

you did the right thing by staying back.

I assume this was you then, trying to justify your actions. You must pull over and stop that is the law.

not sure what you mean , can you explain.

Was the ambulance on a Call with lights and sirens? Or just lights? Or no emergency equipment activated?

No wonder there is so many problems on our roads, of coarse all his lights and sirens where on.

with that info.. the ambulance driver should have increased his speed instead of doing 60km/hr all the way up the hart.
he then could have passed the hog and attend to his call.

Careful X-it….with spelling like yours…..

if he was doing 60km/hr all the way up the hart why have his lights and sirens on???

Yup my spelling is bad, it probably would be better if the English language rules even made sense. I was not looking at my speedometer at all. I was just thinking to myself, If these people do not even get out of the left lane for and ambulance what the heck. And they are so good at blocking of traffic. To bad some red neck with a bush bumper did not come and ram both these jerks off the road. Now you know why the left lane hog rule is a just law.

forget the lane hoggers – all the cops have to do is start hanging out in school zones – could probably make enough in fines to pay off their new building pretty quick. not to mention speeders on queensway (the limit is 50 people) and 1st avenue – what am i saying, just start hanging out anywhere in this city; could catch speeders like fish in a barrel

This must be where all the perfect drivers hang out.

JoeyTomato – the issue is that the left lane hog is usually just keeping up with someone in the right lane so you cannot pass them.

There is no issue here. The law applies to areas where the posted speed limit is 80 km or more. The posted speed limit on the Hart after the North scale is 70 km. so if you are travelling the speed limit it seems that you can use either lane, however most drivers stick with the right lane unless they plan on a left turn further up the highway.

Why all the BS about the left?? We all know that its the speeders that are dipping in and out of traffic pretending that they are the most important people in the Universe and must get to timmies before anyone else.

The police need to start ticketing speeders on a more regular basis. The best place to start would be.

1. Hart Highway
2. Highway 97 from 5th and the bypass to the Airport turn-off.
3. Northwood Pulp Mill Road, and Prince George Pulp Mill Road.
4. 16 East from the bottom of 1st Avenue to the Giscome turn off.
5. 16 West

Prince George drivers need a wake up call. A lot of them drive like maniacs and have no regard for other drivers. The time saved by speeding is nil. The real problem is that the drivers have an acute shortage of manners, a short attention span, a desire to pass everyone on road, and of course no regard for safety.

Palupo says ” so if you are travelling the speed limit it seems that you can use either lane”
NO!! There are four signs each direction posted KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS
geezuz why is this so complicated?

Can you teach the idiots the difference between a merge, and a yield next?

I had to double-check… I thought I was reading Friday Free for All.

Amazing. People lose their minds over left lane hogs, or yoga on a bridge, but if something serious is reported (such as illegal healthcare firings and subsequent Gov’t cover-up), collective shoulders are shrugged.

I don’t know if this helps, but watch the RCMP when they do go up the Hart. The cruiser takes the left lane, and he pegs it at the speed limit, and a parade forms up behind him.

Interceptor. Shouldn’t the signs read Keep right except to pass, or if you are making a left turn off the highway???

The keep right except to pass signs are reminders to people to stay in the right lane. Problem is speeders are always finding a reason to pass.

So if I am doing 80 in a 70 zone in the right lane, I will guarantee you than many cars will pass me on the left lane. If I am doing 90 in the right lane I will still get passed by many cars. Why?? Because the keep right except to pass signs mean nothing to most people.

To make it as simple as possible for you. If I am driving at 80 in a 70 zone and I am in the left lane, why would anyone want to pass me. I am already 10 over the speed limit.

As I said before the only people who get p….d off about the right lane left lane issue are those people who are speeding. Its easy enough to get around vehicles in the right or left lane if there is a need.

The real issue is on the freeways in Vancouver, not here in Prince George on the John Hart Highway.

Stick with the speed limit in the right lane and you will not have a problem. In fact going 10 over the speed limit in the right lane wont cause you much of a problem either.

So, slow down and enjoy the ride.

ski51 … you are so right … I have also noted that behaviour on numerous occasions … I have often wondered it it the same driver or if it is a shared behaviour … ;)

Keep right except pass refers to PASSIN LINES. Left lane in the city is for through traffic and the right lane is for on off traffic. This new law applies to highway traffic. Note this new law applies to speeds above 80 km So where do you have an 80 km speed limit in PG cowboys.
Cheers

Palopu:”As I said before the only people who get p….d off about the right lane left lane issue are those people who are speeding. Its easy enough to get around vehicles in the right or left lane if there is a need.”

No! I get “p….d” off when (abiding by the rules) I am driving in the right hand lane and need to be let into the left hand lane in order to use a left hand exit lane – and those in the left hand lane (speeding) simply will not let me get into the left hand lane, ignoring my left turn signal!

This is the only time when I get “p….d” off since I actually do not care how fast the speeders are going! If they want to go 100 on the Hart (as they often do!) so what? Usually there are no cop cars within miles and even if there was one the speeder is not pulled over as the cop may be on a different assignment and may just ignore the whole thing!

Palopu:”Prince George drivers need a wake up call. A lot of them drive like maniacs and have no regard for other drivers.”

True enough! It is not the only city, though! Drivers in other towns and cities need the same wake up call! Quesnel, Williams Lake, Kamloops, Kelowna (especially Kelowna), Edmonton, Calgary, and so forth! It is a nation wide epidemic! I drove in Montreal and can state emphatically that the chaotic way they drive there is twice as bad as PG and the national average!
