Spruce Kings Fans Will Be Allowed Beer In Stands
Prince George, BC – By a vote of 6-2, City Council has approved a policy revision that will allow the Prince George Spruce Kings Hockey Club to serve alcohol in the general seating area of the Coliseum during games.
The Prince George Cougars have been serving beer at their games at CN Centre since a pilot project in 2012 that was part of a comprehensive review of alcohol service in municipal facilities.
While Councillors Garth Frizzell and Albert Koehler voted against the revision, Councillor Jillian Merrick based her support on a staff report stating the number of alcohol-related incidents at CN Centre decreased once sales were permitted.
“So, it’s very clear that when we provide people with a legitimate space to conduct socially acceptable activities, they tend to do that,” said Merrick. “And when we prohibit it, they tend to step outside the law, so I will happily support this.”
Like CN Centre, there will be alcohol-free sections within the stands. “For folks that don’t wish to have a beer while they’re at the hockey game, they still don’t have to,” said Councillor Terri McConnachie. “I think that we’ll be able to manage everybody being able to enjoy the same space.”
The Spruce Kings are the last team in the 17-team BC Hockey League to begin offering alcohol service at their games.

Prince George councillors have finally used their Heads. Prince George was the only city that did not serve at the games. I guess before the councillors thought they would do the people a favour by not serving and found out the other teams were shaking their heads. So now WHL and BCHL can stop laughing at us.
Next step, beer at Kin 1,2,3 and a beer gardens at soccer games and maybe a mobile one for ball diamonds. Come on council get with the program, lots of revenue lost here.
Good idea ! The beer should be served in containers that can also double as vuvuzelas .
ask for it slinky, this council will probably be more than happy to give it to you …they seem to roll that way.
wonder where alcohol will be allowed next? churches, court house, city council meetings (that may already be happening)
