Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief Endorses Change

Wednesday, October 7, 2015 @ 5:00 AM

Prince George, B.C. – A prominent First Nations chief says it’s not only time for political change in this country, but in two northern ridings.

Tribal Chief Terry Teegee of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council says it’s time to turf the federal Conservatives in Cariboo-Prince George and Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies.

“I’m telling my membership, I’m telling everybody to vote NDP, to elect out the incumbents and see change,” he says. “And if it doesn’t happen nationally with the NDP then perhaps regionally we’ll have a new representative because clearly the Conservatives haven’t been representing us, at least the First Nations in this area.”

Another motivating factor to vote NDP is to get two northern First Nations candidates into parliament.

“It just so happens that we’re fortunate up here in Cariboo-Prince George and Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies because they (Trent Derrick & Kathi Dickie) happen to be First Nations candidates.”

Teegee is also leaning leftward because the NDP is the only party promising to initiate within 100 days of winning government an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal woman.

Teegee says change is possible this time considering many First Nations, including himself, will vote for the first time October 19th.

“Basically you could say Stephen Harper made us vote in terms of trying to get him out of office.”

UNBC Political Science professor Dr. Gary Wilson says first time First Nations voters could make a difference, especially in Cariboo-Prince George this time around.

“There has been a lot of talk about mobilizing the First Nations vote. This (Cariboo-PG) is a constituency that traditionally has not participated strongly in elections,” he says.

“First Nations leaders have been very vocal about getting the vote out and in some ridings like this one that percentage of people could really make a difference in terms of outcomes.”

Why is it ok for unions and first nations to tell their memberships to vote NDP but not ok for anyone else to tell anyone else how to vote.

Yesterday the conservatives dumped a candidate (Jagdish Grewal) for his views on gays and lesbians. He wanted to change someones sexual orientation.

But the NDP recently defended one of their candidates (Scarborough-Rouge Park candidate Rev. KM Shantihikumar who opposes abortion and same sex marriange) because those were his personal views and not the party’s views.

It appears to me that the NDP have their own set of rules. They can do things nobody else does and it’s ok!!….

I agree that it’s time for political change in this country. Terry Teegee lives in Prince George, his offices are in Prince George and the First Nations he represents are not in Prince George. ( Lheidli T’enneh are not a member of CSTC ). Is Terry Teegee the Dick Harris of First Nations Chiefs ?

I like Trent Derrick! Too bad he is running with the NDP.
Conservatives are the only choice for me this time around!

Trudeau suggested very early in the campaign that the Liberals agree that an inquiry is an absolute necessity. The Chief could have used the term suggest rather than tell them how to vote. In any case, it is vital that everybody votes to get a real change. Do not forget the turfing out of the Kelowna accord by Harper. It had already been agreed to and signed by both levels of government. It is very dishonourable to scrap agreements which have been agreed to and signed in good faith. Hold every leader and every party accountable for disrespect and deceit.

The ndp and the natives go hand in hand, no surprise here. Both groups thrive off of the union sector making monthly payments, even if you do nothing…

The NDP keep bringing up all the missing and murdered aboriginal woman,
Im sure there has been thousands of hours spent on investigations by
the RCMP. ITs totally wrong to say or think otherwise. I wont be voteing NDP, sorry, they will change nothing. They don’t stand for the things I stand for.

Trent would be another sitting MP with no voice. He is way out of his element. Nice guy I guess I don’t know him. But I’m sure there is lots of reasons he has ran for city council and once for Mayor and never came close to bieng elected.

Don’t let all the NDP money fool you into voting for trent. Running a campaign that says vote for me because you don’t like the other guy is insulting to democracy. Vote for the best candidate.

Our only choice for real change will be voting for Tracy Calogheros, she is by far a better candidate.

Contact them and have a conversation with both. It won’t take you long to decide.

Makes me wonder the chiefs real motives.

All this talk about an inquiry, why? The RCMP have issued a report so what will an inquiry add to the report except for putting money into the pockets of those who could be involved in an inquiry. Read the RCMP report and it’s ugly facts.

People keep mentioning change, just what would change? Whatever party is in is still government and politions just some will dig into your pockets more than others. I most likely will stick with the devil I know.

I can tell these Conservawh*#* voters are smart like streetcars…there candidates DO NOT show up at meetings……will not even answer the phones?? must think all that cums out of the harpers yap is the gospel….well this will be jesusHharpers last ride…..When and if they ever find a fix for stOOpid I will be the 1st to let you all know…..

Digitus impudicus-Let me get this straight: because Terry Teegee is a member of Takla First Nation, you think he should live at Takla Landing while serving as CSTC chief? That would be one heck of a commute. Or do you think that CSTC should have its offices in Takla Landing? And I guess the CSTC offices should move whenever a new chief is elected?

CSTC needs to have its office in a location that is reasonably central to the member bands, that will attract quality staff, and which provides convenient access to the various agencies and businesses with which CSTC deals. The CSTC chief needs to live close to the office. Criticizing Terry Teegee for living in Prince George is rather like criticizing Stephen Harper for living in Ottawa.

Let’s all vote NDP. I’m tired of working, I want the rest of you to look after me.

The perfect outcome will be.

A coalition government. Harper quits the leadership. Conservative gets a better leader. The Coalition Government dissolves in 24 months. Than we are back at the poles, with the oil prices at $65 US / barrel. This will put the conservatives back in 2017.

I am conservative, I will vote for Todd Doherty. I am a bit skeptical of Harper, he may be our Prime Minister, but he is behaving a bit oddly lately. I suppose he is trying to bust out of his choir boy image the media had been labelling him in his early years….

“The RCMP have issued a report so what will an inquiry add to the report?”

The performance of the RCMP is one of the issues that an inquiry would address.

I am no Conservative but I agree with He Spoke that Harper is yesterdays man, about to be overcome by all the skeletons in his closet. He has no new ideas and his team has deserted him. Conservatives would be wise to sit this election out and wait for a new leader who is not so tarnished. When the leader of the country has to rely on dangerous tricks like polarizing the electorate over the Niqab to get reelected, then he has no honour left and it is time for him to go.

@ billposer. Nice spin. So you agree that CSTC @ CSFS should be centrally located. Wouldn’t that be Ft. St. James ? The people that work at CSTC are too good to live centrally to the people they work for and represent ?

He Spoke, may I suggest you consider your vote go to Sheldon Clare. I think that it is important to stick with your values when voting; whatever they are… the vote needs to be earned.

Digitus impudicus – Fort St. James would be a little closer than Prince George for some of CSTC’s membership, but it isn’t nearly as convenient to the agencies and businesses with which CSTC deals.

First Nations organizations frequently have to balance easy access on the part of their membership against easy access of the organization to outside agencies and businesses. Some do this by having two offices. Tsay Keh Dene, for example, has its main office in its village at the north end of Williston Lake (an eight hour drive on logging roads from Mackenzie) but also has an office in Prince George.

That’s rich. Indians (yes, it’s called the Indian Act) claim to be independent ‘nations’ on equal footing with the federal government of Canada. Suddenly, during a federal election, they become Canadian citizens again, biting the hand that feeds them.
Which is it Terry? Are you in, or are you out?

I’d say be careful what you wish for. In light of the SOC ruling giving aboriginal’s a stronger position when it comes to resource extraction and revenue sharing, it’s quite conceivable they will soon finding themselves as the have’s, and as has been demonstrated in the past, the NDP primary objective is to find a way to transfer from those who have, to those who have not. NDP is a great government if you’re lower income or unionized, but not so great if you built a successful business or earn a high income – which if FN play their cards right, that might be the side of the social ledger they end up on, and watching the NDP tax away their wealth.

FYI – FN people pay tax – unless the work they do, is on the reserve.

I’m a bit of a cynic but I suspect that Teegee’s call to support the NDP is nothing more than an attempt to have the First Nations Transparency Act over turned!

Until recently, First Nations governments were the only level of government not required to make basic financial information public – including items as simple as the amount and source of salaries for public officials.

First Nations people living in squalor, First Nations women being abused and yes, even murdered by First Nations men, First Nations children failing to succeed in our education system, these and many more problems and issues largely ignored by Chiefs and Councils who seem far more interested in paying themselves ridiculous salaries while trying to hide the excessiveness from their own band members!

Teegee says support the NDP! I suspect that Teegee is only interested in supporting himself!

A couple of quotes from the Calgary Sun-Enough is Enough.

Corrupt leadership who have no idea how to lead manage, inspire or teach their people ….who take for themselves and their families and friends and are not accountable to anyone ,and blame, blame, blame the Canadian Government.

Are these people in trouble? Yes. Do they need help? yes. Are they responsible enough to look after themselves and efficiently spend the billions that tax payers give them ? Certainly not. The only way to fix this situation is to bring them into society as equals. They should be getting jobs and paying taxes like the rest of us because in reality, they are no more special than any of the other numerous cultures that call Canada home.

Terry Teegee has no personal stake in the First Nations Financial Transparency Act since he is the chief of a tribal council, not a band. The FNFTA applies only to “First Nations”, which are defined in the Act as bands.

Many First Nations people do not vote precisely because they consider themselves members of their own nation, not Canada or BC. On the other hand, although First Nations claim to be sovereign nations, most recognize that de facto they are not and that, even with the most favourable outcome of treaty negotiations, they will end up with some status less than that of fully sovereign nations. Few First Nations people that I know really want their band to have its own armed forces, currency, postal system, and so forth. First Nations people who vote in Canadian elections recognize that they have a peculiar status, that voting does not invalidate their sovereignty claims, and that voting may be beneficial to them.

Terry Teegee says that he has never voted in a federal election and that this will be his first time.

Across the board all the candidates for the region are generally hard working and have the issues in our region accounted for. With the exception of the blue team who’s MP has been MIA and running candidate is MIA in debates..(By the way in conservative leaning.)

What troubles me is that Teegee has the nerve to openly state that people should vote based on race rather than qualification. His statements on this issue are actually more damaging to the candidates he supports as well just goes to show the underlying intent of NDP supporters..

northman – Actually, Teegee urges votes for the NDP candidates because he considers the NDP platform to be advantageous to First Nations. He mentions the race of the candidates only as an additional bonus.

While I agree in principle that the race of a candidate would ideally be irrelevant, and that voting purely on the basis of race is both wrong and foolish, it is not unreasonable for minorities to want a member of their own group in the hope that he or she will be more sensitive to their needs and perspectives than other candidates. If you vote for a Sikh or a Chinese candidate simply because he is a Sikh or Chinese, that is bigotry, but if you feel that your ethnic group is not well represented, it is perfectly legitimate to prefer a candidate who will be an improvement in that regard. Such a candidate need not be a member of your group, but a member of your group is, other things being equal, more likely to be.

For those who would like to see what exactly the First Nations Financial Transparency Act says, here it is: http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/F-11.66/page-1.html.

Other than band & council Chiefs, I would like to hear what natives think. Do they feel manipulated or exploited for some others political aspirations? Ski51 had a good point as to the NDP & their history of wealth redistribution. Would that include native bands that suddenly find themselves with an infusion of cash ( deals recently signed with certain LNG interests)?

And what would that be northman??humour us…Cons have built 3 homes for Natives in 10 yrs..Just think how different things would be if the Whiteman did not bring to them Firewater and Disease…we could have been the Minority….You are not reffering to the Incumbints are you….working hard?? LMAO at that one!! What the Cons dun for us??
Hmmm then how did we end up with a DEBT of $150 billion dollars…$15 billion per year …Liberals balanced the budget they did ..lets see who pulls the hat out of the rabbit this time round…

tliotg.

Did you actually read my post..? Specifically the part where I dismissed our conservative MPs as being hard working based on their lack of presence and attendance at debates. Face palm..

nothing racially biased here, eh Terry Teegee? If a white guy came out and said to support ‘white christian candidates’ there would be people on trial.

@Leroyjenkins. Seriously? This happens every single day. When does Jason Kenney’s trial start?

Opps Nman my bad …polished my glass eye better now….

Its about time people remembered that the Liberals balanced the budget by reducing payments to the Provinces, which had an effect on health care, borrowing money from the RCMP, Civil Service, pension contributions, and lastly stealing 54 BILLION dollars out of the Employment Insurance fund.

So at best you could say that the workers, and employers in Canada balanced the budget not Paul (Mr Dithers) Martin. The money to balance the budget came out of our hard earned wages.

Get your bloody facts straight before you run off at the lip.

Get your bloody facts straight before you run off at the lip. Ditto.
Cheers

tliotg, DUDE, GET SOME HELP!

What kind of help HG ? The writing style is both amusing and artistic at the same time . More akin to painting a paragraph than writing one . I’m both amused and entertained . Vive la difference .

PG Cariboo, PG peace river are two ridings that are completely ignored.
If you want change vote for someone else.
If we want to be noticed surprise them on October 19th with a candidate representing someone other than conservative.
them we will be noticed

Our regions will benefit more by making a change

It’s funny how there isn’t much discussion on almost any issue; political or not. Put a native story out there and the PG flies and roaches come out and they are all experts lol. I enjoy reading people’s responses; their true character comes out and it’s pretty ignorant and ugly. You are all a dying breed thank God.
