City on Standby for Wintry Blast
Prince George, B.C. – The three centimeters of snow the City of Prince George received overnight and into this morning wasn’t enough for the city to activate its snow removal equipment.
Roads and fleet manager Blake McIntosh says it would take around double that before the city would act.
“In the downtown central business district, once we get 7.5 cm then we start to plow and the same with main arterial roads.”
The lack of ice on the roads even prevented the city from sending out its sanding trucks.
“Because there’s no ice staying on the roads we didn’t put any fracture or salt out,” he says.
“When the ground temperatures are below freezing we would definitely deploy fracturing and salting out at that time.”
McIntosh says that doesn’t mean the city isn’t prepared, noting its currently in the midst of hiring contractors in the event the city receives an even bigger wintry blast in the coming days.
“We’re working through that process. We have a number of them hired for retainer graders and then loaders and trucks are on the rental list so they’re called out as needed.”
