Take Steps to Prevent Winter Falls – Northern Health

Prince George, B.C. – Now that winter’s upon us it’s that time of year for everyone – especially seniors, to ensure they stay safe when venturing outdoors.

That from Jonathon Dyck, public affairs lead with Northern Health, who notes common problem spots include sidewalks and roadways.

“So it’s important that people wear good footwear – make sure they aren’t loose or worn out and to wear shoes with thick soles so you have good grip for that extra bit of traction.”

He says it’s also important to make sure the driveway and pathway up to your house is clear.

“And that’s for your family and for other people that might be visiting. Keeping it clear to reduce the risk of people falling when they’re coming for a visit or if they have something to drop-off.”

Dyck says making sure your home has the proper lighting can also help prevent falls from occurring.

“We know it’s getting darker so sometimes vision isn’t as good so poorly lit stairs can potentially cause a fall hazard.”

Dyck also encourages you to be a good neighbour and to help out seniors or anyone else who may have difficulty helping themselves.

“If there is somebody in your neighbourhood, not just a senior, who might have a sidewalk or roadway that they’re not able to shovel themselves for a variety of reasons, it’s good to help them out and take that extra 15 minutes and do their driveway for them.”

Here are four more key tips:

  • Keep your body active. You’re less likely to fall if you have strong muscles and good balance
  • Have your eyes checked regularly by an optometrist
  • By having your doctor of pharmacist review your medications. Some medications can make you feel drowsy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet
  • Making your home safe

He says statistics show that seniors who don’t take the proper precautions stand a high risk of hurting themselves.

“One third of people aged 65 and over typically fall once or more each year and that’s from a variety of reasons,” says Dyck. “That could be wet floors, ice, or snow outside and falls are the most common cause of injury and sixth leading cause of death for seniors.”
