Don’t Go Home in a Hearse This Holiday Season

Prince George, B.C. – Starting today, police around the province, including in Prince George, will be targeting drunk drivers with their annual CounterAttack campaign.

Sgt. Al Steinhauser with North District Traffic Services says that means motorists can expect a heavier police presence on area highways.

“Members are going to be looking for individuals that partake in partying a little too much,” he says. “So be aware that if you drink, plan to get home in a safe manner.”

Steinhauser says police nab drunk drivers at all hours of the day, including in the morning.

“People that drink heavily at night will stop drinking at 3 in the morning then get up at 7 and drive to their destination,” he says. “The body can only expel so much alcohol and as such they could be a wide awake drunk on the road.”

Prince George RCMP Corporal Craig Douglass says it’s not uncommon to find people impaired on other drugs too.

“Absolutely, there’s certainly been an increased percentage of that over the years, we’re finding drivers out there that believe it’s acceptable to be high on other drugs other than alcohol and that’s definitely not the case.”

He says to expect extra officers around city streets conducting road blocks and suggests the best way to avoid any hassles is to plan ahead.

“The safest thing to do is just arrange an alternative ride. There are other forms of rides out there, whether it be taxis, the bus, Operation Red Nose,” says Douglass.

“There are far better options than a police car or a hearse.”

According to ICBC, during the month of December, an average of four people are killed in impaired related crashes every year in B.C.

And in North Central B.C. an average of 22 people are killed in crashes involving impaired driving every year.

The best way to avoid any hassles is to not leave home, don’t go out to any restaurants, bars, or entertainment facilities or they are going to get you.

You will be going through a road check where an officer of the law will illegally stick their face into your open window and decide to have probable cause to search your vehicle.

How else are they going to generate funds, confiscate party favours and show a need for more policing staff in this region.

Merry Christmas, and have fun holiday now.

Sorry Loki, you can have all the fun you want to, just don’t drive if you’ve been drinking or partaking in drugs.
I for one, among many, really appreciate what the police are doing as far as road checks are concerned. They do a lot in keeping all of us safe. That includes you.
Impaired drivers are starting to get the message. It isn’t socially acceptable any more and there is a good reason for that. Too many people and children have died or have been permanently crippled, just because someone thought they should drive when they were impaired.
Taxi customers have called to report drunk drivers from the cab, when they have taken the more prudent decision and called one for themselves. Imagine that! Drunks, reporting drunks!

Drink and drive and you’re going to get caught. I just hope its BEFORE an accident.

more deaths caused by people texting and distracted driving than drunk drivers in B.C …look it up..
