Cariboo Cougars to Honour Young Cancer Survivor

Saturday, January 9, 2016 @ 8:40 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The Cariboo Cougars will rolling out the red carpet tonight in honour of cancer survivor Jameson Jones.

Jameson was only five when he was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011. As a result he spent six months at BC Childrens Hospital, where he underwent treatment to remove a malignant tumour.

The Cougars visited Jameson in hospital during a road trip, and the annual tradition was born.

“We took some of the guys in there to meet him and they came back in tears, really feeling the emotion of what he was going through,” says head coach Trevor Sprague.

“It’s pretty special for Jameson to be a part of this because he inspired a lot of people in our organization. It’s amazing to have a young man like that come into our dressing room and talk about how much life means to him.”

As part of the sixth annual event, Jameson will be on hand for the ceremonial puck drop, and he’s inviting any child who has spent time at BC Childrens Hospital to join him.

Event coordinator Amy Dhanjal says entry to tonight’s game versus the Vancouver NE Chiefs is by donation.

“Which is how we raise the money. Last year they raised just over $1,500 so obviously we’re trying to meet or exceed that amount.”

She says the family fun event will also include some giveaways, face painting, and an appearance by Rowdy Cat and the Prince George Cougars’ Fanboni.

Tonight’s pre-game ceremony is scheduled to start at 4:30 at Kin #1.
