A Moment of Silence for Matt Pearce

Tuesday, January 26, 2016 @ 7:25 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Matt Pearce was remembered with a moment of silence at tonight’s Prince George School Board meeting.

Pearce, a former science teacher who also spent two years as president of the Prince George and District Teachers’ Association (PGDTA) after a successful career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, passed away unexpectedly Saturday at the age of 48.

“Matt was a talented teacher and leader. He was a coach, father, teacher and an activist,” said Board chair Tony Cable. “He cared about his students in his class and spoke out loud and clear about the importance of teachers and the teaching profession.”

“It is with a heavy heart I speak with you tonight,” added PGDTA first vice-president Joanne Hapke. “Matt touched many people in his life. He was my mentor.”

She also stated he believed in a fully funded education system and “leaves behind many well trained union activists.”

Sarah Holland, president of the Prince George District Parents Council, also mourned Pearce’s loss.

“Our district is fortunate to have many special and dedicated people working with our children,” she said.

“We have lost a very special one with Matt Pearce’s untimely death. Our DPAC, this district, our community and his family and friends will all feel this loss and miss him very much.”
