Site C Job Fair in P.G. Today
Prince George, B.C.- BC Hydro is hosting a Site C job fair today at the Coast Inn of the North, and if previous job fairs are any indication, this one is expected to exceed expectations.
BC Hydro spokesperson, Bob Gammer, says the main players in this stage of the dam construction will be there looking to find folks with specific skill. “They will be looking for job seekers to bring resumes and to make the best first impression”.
The job opportunities cover a wide range of skills, including welders, carpenters, security, cooks, drilling and blasting, “If that’s not a fit for people for right now, this is just an early stage in the project” says Gammer “As we go through later stages in the coming years, remember it’s an 8 or nine year project, so we will have contracts, for example, the generating station, and we will need other skills as we go through the years on this project.”
There have already been job fairs held in Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Fort St. John and Tumbler Ridge and all were well attended by folks looking to land work says Gammer “We will have over three thousand resumes going into the Prince George session.” But he adds that doesn’t mean people should back away from the Prince George event, ” We’re looking for certain jobs and skills right now, but later on there will be other jobs and skills that will be needed. It’s going to be several weeks before the contractors can get back to the job seekers who have shown up, so we suspect some of them will have found work in the meantime, and just because we may have 3,000 plus applications or resumes, they may not all be available to the contractors when they are actually ready to do some hiring.”
The job fair today starts at noon and runs until 7 pm at the Coast Inn of the North.

Seems to me these so called **Job Fairs** are more about getting support for the project, and PR work than about real need for people.
3000 applications going into Prince George is an interesting number. Once you add the Prince George contingent you will have a healthy number of people applying for jobs. These people because of their need for employment will be inclined to support Site C, even though the whole idea is asinine.
Jobs trump common sense in these type of situations, and the Government, Hydro, etc, know this and exploit this part of the project going forward.
Job fair? More like a circus -everything spinning.
Should change your user name to Grumpy Oldman1. Spring is not far away soon you will be able to get outside and shake your fist at dogs and kids and noisy cars playing that rap music.
Get off my lawn.
Nice try guys. Making comments like this in the hopes of discouraging others from attending so you two are the only ones that show-up.
only2c. Not likely. My days of applying for jobs are long,. Gone.
Congrats!
AM- Good idea. Never thought of that. Thanks for the input.
There’s not a lot to this, they just take your resume and give you a paper showing the positions they’re looking for. No interview, nothing.
But at the bottom of the page they say they’ll give priority to people who: demonstrate safe work practices, good judgment, use equipment effectively, perform work steadily, follow instructions, etc.
Now the only way they would know this is if they worked for them before. Seeing the biggest contracts have gone to Alberta companies, this is their way to be able to hire their Alberta people first.
With all these job applications we better not see any Temporary Foriegn Workers at the site.
As if they will actually go through those resumes. Its kind of cruel to dangle the carrot in front of people like that, especially when the project hasn’t cleared all the hurdles to being approved.
Right on!!!
It looks like these are cold calls the job seekers are making by going there. Sort of like: “here are my skill sets and experience. You tell me what jobs COULD be available and WHEN.”
In fact, I doubt anyone will have enough info at this time to know the answers to those two questions the job seekers would have.
Is there anywhere on the internet where I could see a preliminary schedule of the full project over the 8 year period with the periods that specific skills such as welding, cooking, carpentry, etc. will be required and what guarantees there might be if one gets a job as a welder for contractor A, that job is completed, whether I can move on to contractor B who is starting up and continue to work on the project.
If info like that is not available, this is just a gong show in my opinion.
There will be a competition clause. If you’re hired with company A, you won’t be able to hop over to company B without a layoff slip.

Figure it can’t hurt to take a look so I updated my resume and went down to check it out. The line up was from the ballroom ,out the door and around the back of the building. I talked a young man who was on his way out. He waited for 3rd hours. There were four people taking resumes with no time to talk. I’m heading home to email my resume.
After waiting in line for the 3 hours, and getting to the table, they take your resume, and then encourage you to apply online if you are interested in a specific job.
Huge waste of time. I feel bad for all the people in the line who traveled to PG for this.
