Council Pours Over Booze Items
Prince George, B.C. – Council has supported the expansion of alcohol at the Prince George Playhouse, but the vote was not unanimous.
The proposal called for alcohol service to be extended to the seating area of the Playhouse, and only for events that were limited to those aged 19 and over.
“I think it makes sense, and hopefully it will makes a bit of money” said Councillor Brian Skakun. When the vote was called, Councillors Garth Frizzell and Albert Koehler opposed the application.
Then there was the matter of a temporary use permit for the folks who are developing the CrossRoads craft brewery on George Street. They need that temporary use permit before they can get a building permit to renovate what was, most recently, Tony Roma’s on George Street.
Councillor Jillian Merrick joined her Council Colleagues in supporting the CrossRoads application, after all, the project was announced with much excitement and had the Mayor on hand to celebrate the venture, but she did issue a word of caution to developers “If this were a more controversial or contentious zoning, it would have put us in a very difficult place, so I appreciate this is a new venture and we are faring things out as we go along, but I would discourage any future developer from the same approach (pre-announcing the development) as it definitely puts Council between a rock and a hard place.”
Council unanimously supported the temporary use permit.

Any one else not surprised ..alcohol seems to get passed every time.
Since the temporary permit was to allow a business to continue, of the two, that is the only one that should have been passed.
But then I can actually go out for entertainment or recreation for a couple of hours and not have to drown my sorrows, others not so much I guess.
Drown my sorrows? I kind of like the idea that I will be able to savour the one glass of wine I am having that week, instead of chugging it down during a short intermission.
Alcohol that does not mean “going out on the town” gets passed every time. They shoot down cabarets every time they are brought before council.
Your pious attitude never ceases to amaze, BC Racer. You have this bee in your bonnet towards alcohol that everybody is a knock-down drunk if they have a beer at a social event.
I went to Vancouver’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival a few weeks back to see Trevor Noah, Jeremy Hotz and Lewis Black in various locations. We were all allowed to bring a drink with us to our seats. Nobody was drowning their sorrows.
you are wrong… I don’t think everyone is a drunk.
I also don’t think there needs to be alcohol at every function in town, were it appears you might.
YOU are entitled to your opinion and I am also to mine.
maybe stop trying to read something into my comments that are not there… trust me if I think everyone is a drunk I will say so.
I can read your comments quite clearly, you assume others are drowning their sorrows… you said it. There’s nothing to “read into” or misinterpret.
Yes, you are most certainly permitted to have your opinion, as am I to challenge them. Why so sensitive?
Good Lord, get over yourself bcracer. Totally concur with Brother Gecko.
Sorry if some obnoxious drunk spilled a beer on you at a Cougars game one time 7 years ago but it doesn’t mean that every time somebody pours a beer at a social event in PG a redneck riot is going to break out.
Newsflash…most people CAN and DO drink responsibly. The media doesn’t cover the 500,000 people in BC who had a drink last night and made it to and from their homes without incident. Only the two asshats who drove drunk and hurt somebody.
maybe you should read my above comment to Brother Gecko
From the posts….Booze causes loss of brain cells….See the Memorial for the DRUNKS at Austin and 97…they’ll bury a few more young ums..this year…
Speaking of asshats exP……looked in the Mirror lately?
Oh please… you can lose brain cells from head banging to metal music (dude!), and oxygen restriction from sleep apnea (aka snoring).
Lets all live in BPA free bubble wrap to make the nannies of the state happy. Jeepers.
