BC Offers More Help to Alberta

Sunday, May 8, 2016 @ 6:52 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The people and province of B.C. continue to show their support for Albertans who have fled the devastating wildfires.

So far more than $73,000 has been donated to the Fort McMurray relief effort by patrons at BC Liquor Stores.  And on Friday Premier Clark announced a $300,000 government donation to the Canadian Red Cross to support the relief effort.

British Columbians who wish to contribute to the Canadian Red Cross campaign can do so directly by calling toll-free 1 800 418-1111 or donate online at: http://ow.ly/YQT73000Q5s

Meantime, health care personnel are needed in Alberta, including disaster psychosocial volunteers, public health nurses, environmental health officers and paramedics, to be deployed starting at the end of this week.

Health Emergency Management BC (HEMBC) is co-ordinating B.C.’s health system response.   So far 30 disaster psychosocial personnel in B.C. have stepped up to volunteer when deployments begin. B.C.’s Disaster Psychosocial Program, operated out of the Provincial Health Services Authority, has a roster of about 220 registered volunteers, which include social workers, counsellors and psychologists.

HEMBC has also reached out to each of the health authorities and B.C. Emergency Health Services and is working with them to identify any public health personnel and paramedics who may be available to deploy beginning Friday, May 13th.

B.C.’s Mobile Medical Unit – a state-of-the-art mobile medical facility – remains on standby to respond as necessary. The Mobile Medical Unit is a hospital on wheels that can respond to emergency or disaster needs throughout the province and in other jurisdictions.

Emergency Management BC (EMBC), the lead agency in British Columbia for co-ordinating and responding to emergencies, has offered to share incident management staff that organize and lead in emergency operation centres. It can also provide emergency evacuation specialists and a mobile support team of experts to work with emergency social services teams on the ground.

I think you would be getting more people to donate to the Alberta wildfire cause if the interest rates on savings accounts weren’t so low.

Please explain what interest on savings accounts has to do with donating money to a cause.

Very generous Christy but did you notice bc people evacuated because our forests are on fire ?

A couple of hundred people at the most had to evacuate 45 homes in the mile 80 are of the Alaska Hwy. Have not heard anything of houses being burned yet. Have you?

Let us compare that Fort McMurray.80,000+ people. That is 400 times the magnitude at least.

I am sure there are more than 200 in the Fort McMurray area who originated from BC in the first place.

You can do better than that if you want to slight Christy. Take some lessons from Trump.

      Wait .

Ataloss with that mindset it makes you big asset to the great province of British Columbia…..did I say asset-sorry my bad- I meant asshat.

Seeing that all this money is being donated to the Red Cross it would be interesting to know what percentage of this money will be used to support the province and the people of Alberta.
