Ultra-Light Crash Claims Life
Mackenzie, B.C.- RCMP have confirmed that one person has died in the crash of an ultra light plane on the weekend.
Just before 11 am Saturday, August 20th, Mackenzie RCMP received a call that a small yellow aircraft with floats appeared to be descending in an uncontrolled manner. The witness added that the plane may have crashed south of the 22 mile campground.
Mackenzie RCMP were able to confirm an aircraft of this description had taken off from Mackenzie Airport at 09:11 that morning. The Mackenzie Search and Rescue Team along with aircrafts with BC CASARA, Canadian Forces Comox Air Squadron and a local helicopter with Conifex Ltd. were immediately activated by the Mackenzie RCMP.
The home built ultra-light was located around 3 in the afternoon about 10-15 km North of Mackenzie. The pilot and lone occupant was found deceased inside the aircraft. SAR technicians and the Mackenzie Fire Dept. assisted with the recovery of the man’s body on Saturday afternoon.
The Mackenzie RCMP has confirmed that the deceased is a 70 yr old Bear Lake resident. His family has been notified, but the name of the deceased has not been released.
