Prince George, B.C. – CNC student Alicia Fiege is the first winner of the Dr. Larry Breckon Memorial Endowment Scholarship.
Fiege earned the $1,000 scholarship by having a 4.0 GPA in her first year of studies in the Medical Radiography program.
So, how’s it feel to be the first winner?
“It feels pretty honourable really. When I first found out what award I won, I wasn’t really sure what to expect until I started googling Dr. Breckon himself,” she told 250News today inside the Medical Radiography lab.
“And then I really came to understand who he was as a person and the accomplishments he’s made himself and giving back to all the younger generations.”
Breckon, who spent 35 years as a physician in Prince George, was instrumental in the establishment of the Medical Radiography program at CNC.
After he died in the fall of 2015, over 100 donors came together to create an endowment in his honour.
“He was much loved as a family doctor because he truly gave the best of himself to his patients,” said longtime collegue and classmate Dr. Laurie Cook. “Larry was caring and compassionate with an easy-going, approachable manner, and fantastic sense of humour.”
