Rollin’ Out the Turf
Crew pulls synthetic turf into place- photo courtesy city of Prince George
Prince George, B.C. – The upgrades to Masich Place Stadium saw the new synthetic turf installation get underway today.
Project manager Al Clark says the turf is being stitched together by what he calls an oversized sewing machine “It’s pneumatic, run by air, and it’s on a tricycle frame, and they line up the turf pieces and sew away.”.
The turf is being laid on a special base “It starts off with some insulation on the sub grade, then they basically put some granular material on top of that , about 8 inches, then there’s a shock pad, which is like an oversized carpet underlay.”
The synthetic turf is being installed by a company from Quebec. It will take about 3 weeks to complete the installation.
Clark says the project is a little behind schedule ” due to the slow start in awarding the contracts, and we did run into a bit of problems with some bad material that we had to do some excavation in the east portion of the facility, but other than that, we’re looking good.”
The overall project has a $4.4 million dollar price tag and includes a new entry way, improvements to the track surface, new track and field facilities as well.

Hmmmm. Wonder what the bad material could be.??
I would be curious to know the company name. There appears to be a place in Kelowna that deals in the same product, so curious why they didn’t get it. I am not a big believer in the lowest bid statement.
I would imagine other factors that play into the bid process would be experience, able to meet completion date, are they equipped to deal with large surface areas and so on it is very possible that the companies in BC may not be equipped to handle large scale projects
Without having seen the bidding instructions laid out by the city everything is pure conjecture
