Green areas show the property which the OCP has  indicated should be proposed parks.

Prince George, B.C. – The City of Prince George has opened the doors for public comment on the draft plan for parks and open space in the City.

The draft is currently being reviewed by individuals, community groups, associations and agencies with outdoor, recreational, environmental and cultural interests relating to parks and open spaces.

You have an opportunity to review the plan by clicking here, and offering comments. All comments should be submitted by August 12th in order to be incorporated in the final report which is likely to be presented to City Council in late August or early September.

The draft parks plan outlines areas of the City which it says need more parks, and says overall there is a deficit of parkland.

The inventory of parkland has been done on a City and District level, and includes parks that are in school grounds.

Overall, there are more than 2,400 hectares of public park and open space in the region, but there are  deficiencies.

Specifically, the report says there needs to be nearly 28 more hectares of neighbourhood/tot lot parks, nearly 42 more hectares of District park and a further 11 hectares of City “passive” parks like  Paddlewheel park.

The Proposed Park map shown above details the properties which the Official Community Plan indicates should be parkland. Those areas include the lands currently occupied by industry and the CN Rail yards along River Road.

Does the land the city plans to use for their multi-million dollar par 3 count as green space?
Only the greens.

Here's the list of recreation facilities in PG from the report.

Where does the 8 local golf courses, that the people in PG use for outdoor recreation, fit into this list of recreation? Lawn bowling?

"Recreation
Recent developments in Prince George meet some of these recreational needs
through various new facilities such as the Nechako Slo-Pitch Fields, Exhibition
Park Soccer Complex, Citizen Baseball Field, Girls Softball, new Outdoor Ice
Oval, Northern Sport Centre, Rotaract Water Park, Rotary Playground and
Rotary Skate Park. The recreation facilities inventory now includes:
• 22 Sports Fields
• 38 Ball Diamonds
• 71 Tennis Courts
• 10 Basketball Courts
• 65 Playgrounds
• 1 Skate Park
• 1 Water Park
• 1 BMX Track
• 1 Horseshoe Facility
• 1 Lawn Bowling Facility"

Some of these are on school property which is not city owned, therefore, not counted as "green space". School district and city should start co-owning the school properties.
