Prince George, B.C.- Despite the rain and cool temperatures, there is still a serious potential for forest fires in the Prince George Fire Centre. That is the message the Fire Centre wants to share heading into the long weekend. Since April, provincial forest fire fighters have responded to 1,051 wildfires, of which 549 were caused by people. To date, person-caused fires have burned 7,825 hectares, compared to 2,780 hectares burned due to natural causes. Person-caused fires can and do result in significant damage. This year, the Lake Koocanusa fire burned 35 hectares and resulted in the destruction of recreational vehicles and equipment. It was caused by a campfire that was carelessly left unattended. The wildfire south of Edgewood was also cased by negligence. That fire burned approximately 350 hectares, and resulted in the deployment of over 100 wildfire fighters. This season crews in the Prince George fire centre have responded to 209 fires to date, 128 of those fires being caused by humans. Currently there are 95 fire fighters fighting the Falling Creek fire 45 km southwest of Chetwynd, this fire was caused by lightning and is 100% contained. The fire reached 150 hectares in size and is not threatening any structures.
