Prince George, B.C.- Want to float down the Nechako? Leave the booze behind.

Over the weekend, community Policing carried out a special initiative aimed at keeping impaired drivers off the road.
They set up a road block at Foothills Boulevard and Otway Road.

“We were focusing on those who float down the river, get out at Foothills, get into a vehicle and drive back to Wilkins Park" says RCMP Constable Lesley Dix.

That roadblock turned out to be very successful.

“We issued eleven impaired driving charges, numerous 24 hour suspensions were handed out, and there were numerous other infractions including failure to wear seatbelts and carrying too many passengers.”

Cst. Dix says there was a great deal of open liquor seized,  and they seized drugs ( marijuana) “There was so much alcohol being poured out at the site, that officers were having a difficult time telling if the odour of booze was coming from inside the vehicle , so they just started seizing instead.”

Constable Dix says similar initiatives will be carried out throughout the Prince George area, but as the temperature climbs this week, floaters can expect police to turn up the heat.

Interesting how they "seized" booze and stop pouring it out. Must be enjoying this nice hot afternoon with other peoples booze.
Last time I checked, it was common sense and I believe law that you could not travel with open liquor in the vehicle. Kudos RCMP - that's a lot less intoxicated people on our streets. I just wish they would learn from it.
Good use of police resources i would say.
RCMP (or applicable law enforcers) should visit the local lakes - Cluculz especially - to see all the stupid drunk people zooming around in boats with open bottles. Many of these people are residents and weekenders! I've even heard rumors about a boat outfitted with a gas-operated blender.

This not only happens in the summer out there. Drunk people on ski-doos and ATVs fly around on the ice in the middle of the night, in ice fog, etc.

It's amazing that no one has been seriously hurt or killed out there.
when will people grow up? Drinking and floating down the river - fine, kill yourself, but don't drink and drive. If they think getting an impaired is tough, trying killing a kid, or how 'bout an entire family.
Floating down a river on an inner tube with a alcoholic drink in yer hand? Is that specifically against the law as per the Criminal Code of Canada? Betcha it is.
It's against the bc liquor act. Consuming in public.
Call me crazy, but I think it is stupid to float down a river on a piece of rubber or plastic, and get high. Don't any of these stoners have a survival instinct? Think about undertow, and the way the current speeds up around a bridge pier, also causing a flow of water to go straight down around the pier, now go floating (literally, if you are high) down the river and drink/smoke reality away. The concept of a lazy drift down the cool river on a hot day has some attraction, but do it sober! Good on the cops for nabbing some nitwits.
metalman.
I guess if I'm gonna get likkered up on an inner tube on a river, I think I should buy my own private river! By the way, if I win 43 million on the 6-49 tomorrow night, my first purchase will be my own private river. So there! Nyah!!
hey liztshil, not everyones a do-gooder like you. Cluculz is nothing like you portray. Theres nothing wrong with enjoying yourself in moderation. People like you should stay in town and visit the art gallery!
And sparky it is people like you who make everyones outing a nightmare.
That being said...somepeole think it is ok to break the law....just a little bit..and that leads to a little bit more, and on and on...

I have no dilusions that people will toe the line and obey the laws of the land.

I have no doubt that peopel will continue to have no consideration for others.

I will admit that "maybe" when Sparky is out and about, he and his group keep it down.
I also believe that liztdhil probaly has had bad experiences at the lake in question.

I also know that the police can not be everywhere at once. They for the most part do their best and usually those who get caught..cry and moan the loudest...

So if you don't want to get a ticket, or loose your precious booze...follow the rules and everyone can have a good time.
Darwins theory perhaps??lol
perhaps....
