Prince George, B.C.- Want to float down the Nechako? Leave the booze behind.
Over the weekend, community Policing carried out a special initiative aimed at keeping impaired drivers off the road.
They set up a road block at Foothills Boulevard and Otway Road.
“We were focusing on those who float down the river, get out at Foothills, get into a vehicle and drive back to Wilkins Park" says RCMP Constable Lesley Dix.
That roadblock turned out to be very successful.
“We issued eleven impaired driving charges, numerous 24 hour suspensions were handed out, and there were numerous other infractions including failure to wear seatbelts and carrying too many passengers.”
Cst. Dix says there was a great deal of open liquor seized, and they seized drugs ( marijuana) “There was so much alcohol being poured out at the site, that officers were having a difficult time telling if the odour of booze was coming from inside the vehicle , so they just started seizing instead.”
Constable Dix says similar initiatives will be carried out throughout the Prince George area, but as the temperature climbs this week, floaters can expect police to turn up the heat.
