Prince George, B.C. - City Council will be asked to give first and second readings to the zoning change that would allow the Chances Bingo hall to move to the Treasure Cove Casino site.
This is the first step towards clearing the way for a public hearing on the matter. If Council grants first and second readings tonight, the public hearing would take place on August 25th. The change would not see any increase in the number of slots in the city as the limit on slots will stay at 575 and the 100 allowed with the Bingo hall will not be moved over.   The application also requests 10 fewer bingo seats.
Also on the agenda for this evening’s council meeting is the pawn shop bylaw. The revised bylaw   changes the amount of time for the pawn shop or second hand dealer to hold on to items before allowing the resale it also revises some of the items that would be included in record keeping. The bylaw would require more detailed records be kept on pawned or second hand items and the people who provided them to the store. The approval of the first two readings tonight would set the stage for a public hearing on the 25th.
Council will get another update on the flood mitigation and flood risk analysis study. Council will be advised that staff have applied for grants under the Emergency Management BC Flood Protection program for:
  • Extra dollars for the flood risk evaluation and Flood Control Solutions Project
  • Multi year gravel removal program at the confluence of the Nechako and Fraser Rivers with the first year of funding to proceed with the 2 dimensional river hydraulic analysis sediment transport analysis environmental impact anises and regulatory agency permit applications
  • Multi year project to construct a dyke between River Road and the Nechako River to the 200 year flood construction level , the first year funding to proceed with engineering design and floodway restoration which includes asset removal and property acquisition where property owners are in concurrence.)
The draft Parks and Open Spaces plan will be  presented to Council, but the final plan won’t seek Council approval  until the next meeting which is set for the 25th of August.

Bingo - Bongo! Who cares where these loosers have their money lifted?

What's happening with the ALR??

As your councillor I would be asking this question at every meeting.
Gravel extraction out of the Nechako is better than dredging. Get some value for our money.

The Nechako River doesn't flood properly anymore and scour out the weeds and scum for the sturgeon, so gravel extraction would help the wildlife I'd guess.

Gravel extraction from the Nechako; A good idea, on the surface, and one that I have supported, as a means of dealing with the potential for flooding that an ice dam would create (again) We must also consider how the work would be carried out in order to not affect the salmon returning to spawn further upstream. Much has been learned from studying the effects of for example rock slides in the fraser canyon on the behaviour of the salmon. I think that the needs of the fish have to be considered here, as well as flood prevention. We know that there is going to be some silt and sediment clouding the water for a while, why study it?
Anyway, from the gobbledegook description of the funding process, it does not look like the authorities are trying to get some gravel removed this year, which is what they need to have done. Why were we not at this stage (funding application) three months ago? Don't bother, we know the answer.
metalman.
Hmmm...how did they get the casino issue before council so fast?
Or is that normal?
Just seems a bit quick.
Mr Majors does not give money to the counclers election campains for nothing. As far as the gravel extraction goes while it is being removed why don't they pan it for gold. Just might cover some of the costs.
The gravel in its self is gold. If they dont give it away.

cheers
I have a toonie that says Mr Major's appication will pass first reading and he will be well on his way to moving the bingo palace to the casino...
I have a further toonie that says it will pass all the readings...

I'll add another loonie to the mix to be donated to the CDC.....
I hope it gets moved, the sooner the better. Nice "Chances" sign, all orange and red, looks like a circus sign. Why do people think this is an attractive building - it's kind of ugly if you ask me, just a big square box.
