Fort St John, B.C. - Mounties say a 73-year-old Washington State woman is dead and her 36-year-old male passenger in hospital with serious injuries after a Sunday afternoon crash on the Alaska Highway at Mile 57.
Police say witnesses reported seeing a southbound red Chrysler PT Cruiser at about 3:30 pm cross the centre line and dive into the ditch, continue at highway speeds for some distance, then collided with a tree.
RCMP say alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the crash and report both the driver and the passenger were wearing their seatbelts.
No names have been released and both the Fort St John RCMP and the BC Coroner's service are investigating the fatal crash.
