Prince George, B.C. - It has taken  four years,  but the Canfor Corporation has accepted payment of $500,000 from the Hospital Employee Union (HEU) to settle a legal action launched by the company in 2004.

Canfor made a legal claim of damages for lost production and labour costs related to picketing of its operations at the Northwood pulp mill on April 30, 2004.

Rob Stewart, Canfor's Vice-President of Human Resources, was quoted: "This settlement concludes a successful negotiation with the HEU."

Unions. Mob rule and mob mentality.
Corporations, greed and more greed.
Do-Gooders,Nobody works,Nobody gets hurt....gimmee a break people!
Unions shouldn't be bullying companies that have no part in their dispute.
Why is it, that when I write a comment on certain issues, they are taken off of here!! Is it my PC screwing up, or is this sight becoming politically slanted!!! I would hope not! I did write a comment on this article, but it quickly vanished!

Any thoughts???
Will Canfor give the money back to the community? To the "workers" who didn't have the balls to cross the picket line? or will Jimmy P just get a little bit richer?
Don't mention CANFOR on this sight, they will remove your comment.

As I said before, (it was taken off for some reason) In an indirect way, HEU money is our money, is it not?? We pay for health care, through our tax burden, do we not??

Then for CANFOR to get $500,000.00 from HEU, is to take $500,00.00 from the tax payers. That would be you and I, right???

CANFOR, what a nice corporate citizen!! You think??? I don't think so. Jimmy, don't ever forget where you came from. I read all about you in your early years! I admired you for all your accomplishments!!

What happened "Jimmy"???
Well I have to agree with, withtaxinapothole, it's our money paying Canfor............and for what
Wrong taxinapothole, HEU money is money belonging to the Hospital Employees Union members.
The question is what will Canfor do with the easy money they got?
I new Gordo and his goverment stole from the hospital employee workers when they ripped up there collective agreement but I didn't know Canfor was in line for a piece of them as well.
Farnorth, I said, in an INDIRECT way. Our taxes pay for health care workers salaries, out of which, they pay union dues. Most unions, have an agreement with the employer (the tax payer in this case)to contribute to their union on their behalf!! So, it is our money that Jimmy and the boys got!!

When we as tax payers, wake up, maybe we can put a stop to the thieving thugs!! I know I have about enough!!
Sounds like taxinpothole has the stuff to lead a union mob.

The unions like to have lots of rights, but those rights don't include doing anything they want to anyone they choose. Clearly unions have so much power they get a little confused and hurt people. Then the thugs wind up in court to account for their conduct.

If the HEU money all comes from taxpayers, and it is medicare dollars, what the heck were their thugs doing down at the pulp mill?

It is good that the court hit the union right where it hurts and send a message to not let their mob get out of control. Remember it was out of control union members that planted a bomb and killed a carload of mine workers. The union leadership has to recognize that some of their members are very brain washed, and therefore the union must not incite their mob to do stupid things.

The union leadership has to stop being so irresponsible or the courts will hit back. The courts are the only protection we have from organized mobs running on the loose.

This was part of the heu deal that rolled back the wages of the workers. While Gordo scaled back the wages of these people, he felt free to give his cronies double digit wage increases, more than once.
The unions of this province should have supported these workers with a general strike, which I think is what the Northwood guys were trying to do. Unions have lost their teeth.
Yama, your hatred for unions is blatant. did you grow up in a household with this anti-union sentiment, or were you such a bad employer that your workers felt a union might help them?
Just wonderin'

Union members don't cross picket lines for a reason doofus.
Perhaps Opinion 250 could start adding a little bit of background to the stories they post on their site. Many people don't have a clue what you are writing about at times.
Hey polecat
Why would you blame someone that planted a bomb that killed people on being out of control union members? Tell us what being a union member has to do with planting bombs.
If I am not mistaken the people that killed these other people were in fact other people, albeit very sick people. Being union has nothing to do with killing anyone. You are a Moron.
I know a former helicopter pilot that killed someone 30 years ago.
I think he did it because he was an out of control helicoter pilot. Your a real winner dude.
HEU money paid to Canfor is NOT taxpayer money. It is in fact HEU member money.
You know, they are people like you and I that pay union dues.
Some peoples kids, unbelievable.
Some non union people fail to realize how the unions have impacted their lives in a good way! Do they benefit from WCB, health insurance, good wages(union or non union). Our high standard of living, is because of union influence! Polcat, you have forgotten, or never appreciated what side your bread is buttered on!! You have allot of nerve to refer to me as a potential leader for a union mob!! You are twisted!!
I wonder if the Polcat bans union members from his business, or does he take their money, thereby living off the avails of trade unions?
Some people on these posts should take the time to read the article.

The court would have awarded Canfor damages in the amount of $500,000.00 or a lot more for lost production and labour costs. Contrary to what some people beleive, you cannot take an action that shuts down somebodys business without paying the consequences. The Union knew it couldnt win the court case, and therefore went hat in hand to Canfor to get a settlement that wouldnt bankrupt them.

Canfor could have fired all there employees who did not cross the illegal picket line, however this would have caused all kinds of problems,so instead they sued the HEU for illegal picketing.

A very simple and clearcut case. If there is any mystery at all it is why didnt the Union leaders know that what they were doing was illegal and that there would be a cost attached to it???
Palapou writes..."Canfor could have fired all there employees who did not cross the illegal picket line, however this would have caused all kinds of problems,so instead they sued the HEU for illegal picketing."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Completely untrue Palapou, it is not illegal to refuse to cross any picketline, nor could Canfor fire anyone for doing so.

Get your facts straight before posting.
and so, it is perfectly OK for Gordo to break a binding union/employer contract, rip it up, and do what ever the hell he wants??? I'll tell you something, when I was involved with the union movement, we would have shut this province down so fast, old Gordo would have run for his life. He is truly despicable!! A !@#$^%$ @^*#*&$ at best!!

Hang 'em high!!

Just my oppinion!!
lostfaith..

The union members that killed those miners had no personal grudge against the miners they killed, and didn't even know who or how many they were going to kill.

The union members killed those people for the union, and in the cause of unionism.

Didn't read about the helicopter pilot that killed someone, what was his reason?

HEU members that gave the money to the union should hold the union accountable and get rid of the less intellegent leaders that lost their money to Canfor.

I have no problems with unions, just the thugs in it that bring disgrace on their members. Although "Lostfaith" is probably an exception.
Polecat
The PEOPLE that killed those miners were people. Being a union member has nothing to do with these murders.

You write..."The union members killed those people for the union, and in the cause of unionism."

Your a sick dude and you should seek help.

People like like you that post Crap like this should be banned from this site.

This is another one to add to your history of BS here on this site.

Lostfaith. The only Union that I am aware of that does not or will not cross a picket line is the Longshoremens Union. This is because it is written in their contract.

Insofar as illegal picket lines go they have no validity. The HEU settled with Canfor because they knew that what they and their members were doing was illegal.

Dont try to cover up illegal activity with
with trite phrases. Show me where you get the information that people can refuse to go to work because of illegal picket lines. Keep in mind that the HEU has nothing to do with Canfor, or its employees, and going through the picket line would mean absolutley nothing. This picket line would not be a valid reason for not showing up for work.

Palapou
Apparantly you are not aware of much then are you.
I don't know what type of union background you may have, however I have a 35 yr union history in BC and I am very aware of the operating procedures of most. One of the unions I have belonged to in the past is the ILWU.
I have belonged to every major union that operates in BC and know of none that will cross any picket line unless ordered to do so by upper union brass.

I have been involved with many strikes in BC over the years and have never seen any union member cross any other unions picket line. To do so would have definite consequences.

Stick with true facts in your posts.

Lostfaith. I notice that you steer clear of the term **illegal picket line** as opposed to a legal picket line. Two different things entirely.

As a general rule the Labour Relations Board, the Union and the Companies involved come to an agreement in regards to picketing and the crossing of picket lines for LEGAL strikes, however this process has no bearing what so ever on ILLEGAL strikes for the simple reason, THEY ARE ILLEGAL.

Just because Union members do not cross picket lines doesnt mean they are immune from the consequences of their actions. There is a difference between Union members who are on strike and union members who are not on strike and still working. As I originally said Canfor could have taken action but it would have created biggar problems than they already had, so instead they sued the HEU and came up with a $500,000.00 settlement.

Unions are alway changing their picket lines to information ;pickets so that other members not on strike can go to work.

Have a nice day.
