Prince George, B.C.- The Premier has delivered a new grant to communities to cover the costs of the carbon tax.
The Premier told the UBCM that the full costs of the carbon tax will be paid back through a special grant. To qualify, communities need only sign on to be carbon neutral by 2012.
133 communities already qualify. Gordon Campbell says communities will be expected to submit an estimate of the cost of the tax this year, and will receive a cheque before the end of March 2009. In the next year, they will be paid the exact amount of the taxes paid in the previous year.
The Premier made it very clear, the province is not backing down on the carbon tax, but is sticking by its promise that the tax will be revenue neutral.
He says there will also be discussions with School Districts to see that they have the same opportunity.
The City of Prince George has estimated the tax will add at least 80 thousand dollars to it’s annual budget. The School District is also facing significant increases for transportation and heating.
Earlier today, the UBCM passed a resolution that would have the UBCM lobby the provincial government to come up with incentives for communities that will be hit the hardest by the tax because of their climate, remoteness, and lack of options for green alternatives.

Just another reach into my wallet.
There has yet to be a revenue neutral tax of anything.
If it is revenue neutral, why have it?
