Prince George, B.C.- The Premier has delivered a new grant to communities to cover the costs of the carbon tax.
The Premier told the UBCM that the full costs of the carbon tax will be paid back through a special grant. To qualify, communities need only sign on to be carbon neutral by 2012.
133 communities already qualify. Gordon Campbell says communities will be expected to submit an estimate of the cost of the tax this year, and will receive a cheque before the end of March 2009. In the next year, they will be paid the exact amount of the taxes paid in the previous year.
The Premier made it very clear, the province is not backing down on the carbon tax, but is sticking by its promise that the tax will be revenue neutral.
He says there will also be discussions with School Districts to see that they have the same opportunity.
The City of Prince George has estimated the tax will add at least 80 thousand dollars to it’s annual budget. The School District is also facing significant increases for transportation and heating.
Earlier today, the UBCM  passed a resolution that would have the UBCM lobby the provincial government to  come up with incentives for communities that will be hit the hardest by the tax because of their climate, remoteness, and lack of  options for  green alternatives.

carbon tax = more money from us to the government.
Just another reach into my wallet.
There has yet to be a revenue neutral tax of anything.
If it is revenue neutral, why have it?
When can I expect to see my Carbon Tax Grant in the mail?
I've been burning straight LPG in my truck for the past 20 years and still get nothing for it except a rise in prices when gasoline goes up. Very annoying when you consider LPG is a byproduct of natural gas and has nothing to do with the price of a barrel of crude oil.
If it's revenue neutral, then save all of the administrative costs and just do something about our carbon footprint. Chester
Gordo has no plan, he is just throwing money around to his friends.
he is making it up as he goes along. Starting with the $100 bucks to buy our silence. He is totally off track with this BS.
By the way, how the hell can you tell if a community is carbon neutral. Do you claw it back if some bureaucrat says your not neutral? What if I become carbon neutral?
A tax on something you can't see and 99% of the world can't measure???? This has the makings of the stupidest political blunder of our time. The Irony is it won't make a rats ass difference to the environment. They had no mandate for this and they will pay for it.
Hmm, similar result as the gun registry. Thank god nobody has been shot with an unregistered weapon.
Well, even the dumbest bunny in our clubhouse knows this is not "revenue neutral" and never will be... there is no such thing in reality... nice concept, but it just does not exist in any legitimate accounting system.

Too bad that Carole Taylor had to be sacrificed as the goat for this stupidity.

The carbon tax is a TAX ! What part of that do we not understand ??

Now GC wants to give munis some hush money for their support... and does not want the public to be "double taxed"... what kind of twaddle is that ???

Ahwww jeeze... you dropped the soap again.

:-)

what I really like is paying GST on the Carbon Tax...I guess being taxed is a service
All true....but the BIG question is, will anyone remember this at election time next May?
The Campbell government is pretty damn sure we won't.
Why charge the carbon tax if they just give it back as grants? Hmm, good question. I guess the reality is they are going to hold on to a hell of a lot more than they grant out, even with the super duper $100.00 rebate we got. Mine got me a half tank of fuel, hooraw.
metalman, the carbon spewer.
What a crock!

Ok then...so, Gordo, what about Northern Health? Our budgets are tight too. What about College of New Caledonia? How about all of the other provincially funded organizations. I also think that non-profits should be exempt.

Hey I am carbon neutral. Where's my bonus? Do I get a reward for being green? Hell, I will change my name to Kermit the frog too!

" It's not easy, being green" - Kermit the Frog (Jim Henson muppet)
Does anyone know how they determine if someone or a city is Carbon neutral?
