Prince George, B.C. – The sixth annual Benchmarking Report that tracks the economic performance shows the City of Prince George's economy remained strong in 2007, and has kept pace with the growth seen around the province.

Some of the highlights of the report include: a net increase of 1,300 jobs in 2007, the second highest rate of annual growth in building permits, a higher rate of growth than the province for new businesses, and number one rankings for average income and employment.

“The resilience of the Prince George economy in the face of transformation in the forest industry points to reduced dependence on this industry and diversification into other areas,” says Tim McEwan, President and CEO of Initiatives Prince George.

Prince George had the highest annual employment rate among benchmark cities, indicating
high productivity. The City also had the largest decline in unemployment.

These findings indicate increased economic stability overall, despite the impacts of a downturn in the US housing market, a strong Canadian dollar and the pine beetle infestation. This lessening of historically devastating impacts suggests that diversification efforts are having some positive effects.

So, the sky isnt` falling? What next can "the hordes" complain about?
Lets see, it's 3:52PM as I type this and you posted at 3:19PM, and this article is less than an hour old.......

I believe that the actual report is 100% correct, and I don't believe many informed people would argue differently. 2007 was a great year for most anyone.

Oh whats that I see on my desk? Its almost the end of 2008? How about some updated numbers???!!!?
Pay attention to the details though. What do they consider a job ? An ex-Canfor worker who used to get paid $50,000 and contribute to our local community is replaced by a person working two hours a week for minimum wage, that is counted as a job.

If you look at net wages paid in PG, they have dramatically gone done over the past few years.
As a whole in 2007 were many Canfor jobs lost? Winton Global was temporarily shut down near the end of the year, but I don't think the big losses started kicking in until 2008.

Job creation numbers seem pretty abstract to me... Building a School supposedly 'creates' 500 jobs or whatever - well these people already had jobs with WIC or whomever so its a bit of a farce to call those jobs 'created'.
Hmmm this report is telling us all about how great 2007 was and it's almost 2009.

Just an attempt at keeping all the sheep thinking things are cool.
Yes, you are so right Lostfaith!
Well lostfaith, jonnypg, lunarguy and maybe rayban68 are more than welcome to move to a 'better' place in BC, or in another province.
lost faith, you are correct. We spend how many tax dollars to close the barn doors after the horses have left the barn.

Talk about a pure waste of money.
He speaks too.

Don't let the door hit you all on the way out.
Hey moses did you lose your mill job this summer, I know I did...find another one", you will say, not that easy to uproot my wife and kids where I have lived in PG for the past 35 years.
and one last thing, don't believe everything you read.
The drug community has vastly improved PG's economy. Give credit where due.
With the Goverments subsidy of early retirement there are a lot of jobs available right now. NCP workers have been hired at Clear Lake and Northwood is currently hiring 17 more, some of the successful canidates have been ex NCP'ers. There is always a lag from the time data is collected to the time it is analyzed. Your employer does not pay you at the end of the day! Back in the day if one job did not pay the bills you got another one, yes it is hard but we are not exactly starving in this town. If you WANT to work there is lots of work available. Some people just want to be paid for breathing!
Strange no one has looked at the unemployment rate in PG. Last figures showed that PG had an unempoyment rate of 8.2% and the rest of the province stood arond 5%.

Has Mr McEwen considereed those figures?

Cheers
Johnny PG.
Ten years to this day I lost my position as Manager for Automagic Tire, as well as 30 other people. Now that was a tough day.

As an early 50 ish guy with lots of experience and very little education I moped around for a few months and decided to go back to school, since job opportunties were very skinny then.
I did well over the next few years, picking up jobs to support me and the family while continuing to get my diploma.
I tried a few positions and finally found the one I should have been in 40 years ago.

I apologize if I seem a bit thick skinned at the loss of jobs today. It is not new, and it will happen again. I still own my house, I am still married, and my kids all own houses in the City. Hopefully one of the grandkids will own one as well in the next decade.

The past is the past, get on with the future. That is the only thing you can control.

metalman, wolf in sheeps' clothing.
If I lost my job and it came down to a choice of uprooting the family and starving and/or not having a job, I would be uprooting the family and moving where the work was.
It's tough to do MrPG but I would be doing the same thing
I was in the construction industry for a good many years as a carpenter. I felt the highs, as well as the lows. On the lows, I went elsewhere for work.. When it picked up, I came home, all the while, my wife and children stayed here in PG. Is it good for a solid family relationship??? I think not!!

You do what you have to do to survive! I do agree however, about giving us some stats for this year, quit smoke screening us!! As you have heard me say before, figures lie, and liars figure!!! When will we learn!
