Please help me...how does government determine if a city or person is carbon neutral. Is there even such a measurement?
Collecting a carbon tax, having it dissapear into the vast bureaucracy with nothing to show for it. That's CARBON NEUTRAL.
Sure there is Zoom .... you can easily tell by the glaze in the person's eyes... when they are TRULY "carbon neutral", their eyes go kind of a dull, glassy, beige, colourless sort of colour... and the face has that stunned, expressionless, blank, "taxed to death" kinda look...

No offense intended.... but that's the same image I have seen in the mirror since July first.

BTW... this "rebate" that the munis are supposedly going to get back... where does that money come from to pay "their" portion of the carbon tax in the first place ???

And if the rebate is going to be used to help "lessen the town's carbon footprint" ... where did the money come from to make that footprint in the first place ???

Why not just NOT spend that money to make that footprint to start with ???

Isn't this UBCM rehetoric just a bunch of "circle jerk twaddle" talk ... or am I missing some giant message ???

Blessings :-)

V.

Carbon neutral is Al Gore making 200 grand a speech on this carbon bs. It will turn out to be the biggest scam history. Climate has always been changing and always will. Man has little if any effect on any global warming. There are many web sites with enough proven information to make a person think. A good one to start with is icecap.us. Check it out and its links. The earth has been warmer in the past. We are being scammed by big money enviromentalists.
Easy to tell ,you are Carbon Neutral if you book a Trip to Mexico and Hawaii in the same Year and have the new Light Bulbs and Furnace installed in your House ??
In this part of the world, you are carbon neutral if you have an electric car, electric furnace, electric stove, electric water heater, electric fireplace, electric snowmobile, electric ATV, electric boat, go only to those restaurants that cook on electric appliances, and don't buy anything that uses fossil fuels in its production.

And do not forget not to breathe out since you are breathing out carbon dioxide.
Does anyone know of a local recycling firm that DOES NOT require the washing of every bottle or the washing AND label stripping of tin cans?

My household has noticed that ever since we've been recycling our water consumption has skyrocketed.

Now we're just wasting a lot of water because we're required to wash all of our bottles and tin cans. It kinda seems counter productive doesn't it?

If you take all of the recyclers in just one city where washing their bottles and tin cans prior to recycling is required then there is going to be (or already is) a LOT of wasted water.

We know people in Vernon BC who are NOT required to do this and as result they don't waste any water.

Any ideas or suggestions?

gus, I'm with you on that but are used batteries and use of electricity not harmful to the environment?

seamutt, You got it right. I have mentioned this from time to time but no one is listening. The earths orbit is nor perfect and it wobbles. Just a fraction of a degree off its orbit affects the sunlight which will cool or heat the earth. We only produce a small amout of C02 compared with the amounts produced buy our oceans.

These are not big oil stats they are studies done by a number of universities including UBC.

Our politicians are taking advantage of our knowledge and are going to tax the hell out of us to make us feel good and it seems we are eating it. When will we wakeup and smell the coffee

Re-300 Page Technical Report on Air Polution

"A New Significant Source of Local Pollution". Diesel Locomotive Enissions!!! It this absolutely unbelieveable or what?

Next thing to be a big surprise will be the increased polution generated from the additional planes visiting our fair city.

"The report makes 30 recommendations with a focus on upgrading the modelling system and improving the emission inventory for further study".

It goes on to say "Roundtable officials - after consulting with other committee members declined to comment on the specific content of the report because its review is not complete". "A third party reviewed is to be hired with a report due at the end of November". Fowwowing the modelling study's completion, an updated report, although not necessarily in its full, technical form, will be presented to the air quality roundtable." However, it will likely push the release of the report for public consumption and the creation of the next stage in a fine particulate pollution reduction plan into 2009".

I have to agree with PACHA president Dave Fuller who says; "despite continuing studies, he sees little evidence of action"

This reminds me of an old saying that goes like this. "When you are up to your backside in alligators, it's hard to member that your main objective was to drain the swamp".

When are we actually going to do something about all of the sources of air polution in this city? We know enough to start immediately. We don't need to know everything before we begin.

You can be Carbon Neutral. It only requires your DEATH. Tax that.

PS Wait until you get the cheque.
zoom asked, "Please help me...how does government determine if a city or person is carbon neutral."
If a person does not pass wind after drinking beer, then they are carbon neutral.
Change up the topic a bit. I see the new Sandman is rolling nicely along. Should be ready for the overflow from the 2010 games. I wonder if there are any local suppliers or trades on that job. We used to always stay at the Sandman in Van. Calgary, Quesnel etc. but will never stay in another as they do nothing to support local trades or suppliers. Hope everyone catches on and does likewise.
Right you are redtoobee. They send one manager that knows construction, and he hires local trades people by the hour, does not have to pay for local contractors that way. The Sandman organization belongs to the construction association as an associate member, which makes them assume that members will stay at the Sandman when out of town, to patronize a fellow member.
Sorry sandpersons, it has to go both ways, you hire local firms, they stay in your hotels. I too used to stay at the Sandman, Mcbride, Smithers, Quesnel, Cache Creek, and so on, but no longer. I doubt they will miss me though.

I thought a tax on a tax was illegal? Someone know more about that? GST on top of carbon tax! Outrageous!

Campbell now spending a lot of time back peddling by hammering home that there is no going back on the carbon tax. Well I want to be rewarded for being green. IMO everyone who meets the criteria should be exempt, receive a grant what ever...

What about the potholes? Still bumping along on Ospika and side streets...atrocious! Engineering dept asleep?

What is happening with river road? the temporary berm? Cottonwood Park? Taxed to death and nothing to show for it!

Caller to Meisner on radio this am mentionned the signs on poles...other communities have city crews do clean up! Where are ours??? It is THEIR job imo. Yes those who put them up SHOULD take them down but if we want things to actually happen...how about the city do this as they waste fuel driving around & around & around in those brand spanking new trucks of theirs. Garbage can be done too. So can trimming along sidewalks. And poo/needle clean up...actually Northern Health van crew should be doing this, or alternatively have them shoot up in a safe environment instead of alley ways.

Seems like a no brainer to me.
pisspulper;

Good suggestion but I know plenty of people who wouldn't care to do that.

It's also very hard to pound the frozen water into the plastic containers (when your trying to clean them) in the winter... lol...

Thanks for your suggestion.
Today's suggestion to seize any drug house from a landlord and sell it under them to help fight the never-ending losing war on drugs seems absolutely ludicrous to me.

We're dealing with organized crime so powerful that neither or Fed or Prov government can overcome it, and our police seem completely helpless at times, but we expect Joe Blow landlord to step in and make the real changes?

If a gang can get by torturing and killing civilians, how in the world do you expect your every day guy who rents out his house for a little money on the side to have the power to shut down their crack shack? Something needs to be done on a higher level!

Isn't it getting obvious that we're just not winning here? Throwing more and more resources at the problem isn't going to solve it, we've seen that.

Perhaps its time a new approach needs to be taken to combat this problem?
Drawing a parallel, I wonder since a lot of people say the price of my property is going to fall soon, can I stupidly presume that my property taxes will go down too? Based on my assessment? Or will it be like big oil with the price of the barrel of oil going down but not the price of gas? Too similar, maybe, eh? Maybe a bunch of nefarious politicians are working on a spin to keep my property taxes up while my land values go down. Time will tell. Grrr. I hate all governments. Some more than others.
From what I understand Prince George has a Green candidate fer the federal election. I also understand it is some law student broad who lives in Vancouver and who hasn't been here, won't come here and won't talk with the media. Something about women quotas. Seems they couldn't find a babe Greenie to run up in these parts. Too many Sarah Palin types? Too busy working or raising a family to spend time losing the election? You just wait and mark my words, after the federal election this chick will get between 100 and 150 votes from some ninnies here in PG and area. I'm getting my told ya so tirade all printed up right now.
Harbinger - property tax amounts are not set based on the absolute value of your property, but rather the relative value. So if my house is worth $200k and yours is worth $400k, then you pay twice as much tax as me. When they drop to $150k and $300k, you still pay the same amount of tax money, but the percentage multiplier of your property value clearly goes up. In the end the city wants their 100 million in tax or whatever so the property tax value is just a convenient method for them to calculate your share of the 100 million dollar tab.
newtechguy, hehe oops, good point.
Its great to read more and more comments about the global warming scam. I have sent emails to countless politicians and news anchors and have never received a reply back even acknowledging that they received it. What the hell gives.

It just seems that most have their head in the sand and don't want to hear the truth. Don't they think that a controversial subject like global warming will increase readership or listeners or viewers.

I challenge any news anchor or talk show host, including you Ben, to get the debate started and bring in a few knowledgable people who know the real truth. It shouldn't be to hard to find a scientist to fill in on each side. 4,000+ agreed with Gore and Suzuki and 33,000+ disagreed.
The kind of guy I am, is I wake up every morning and turn on the CBC news and wait for the announcement that Israel has bombed Iran. They are gonna. One of these days. Then life will get interesting.
Oh yeah. I'm gonna stop being sexist. Broads don't like that. And I'm also gonna stop being self-depricating because I'm not very good at it.
Property values will go down but the amount you are taxed will remain the same or rise with the adjustment of the millrate. Quickly now, tell me if you have ever seen city taxes go down.
