Prince George, B.C.- United Steelworkers Union Local 1-424 has contacted different levels of the Provincial and Federal Government,in dealing with the latest closure announced by Canfor.
“We want to make sure all the bases are covered moving forward,’’ said Frank Everitt president USW Local 1-424. “It’s crucial that all the information and support services are in place to supply the correct information and options to our members and others affected by this closure.
The Local Union office has also been in contact with local area service providers to make sure the process involved with providing services and assistance programs moves forward as smoothly as possible.
"Concerns expressed by our members at the Tackama Plywood Plant in Fort Nelson cover a wide spectrum,” added Everitt, “this is so overwhelming, and a real blow to our members at Tackama that have worked so hard to make the plant successful in the worse economic climate this Industry has ever experienced.”
The Local Union will work with all Government agencies, management and our plant committee, to select the appropriate time for a meeting with members to answer questions and provide information on the services and programs to assist them through this most difficult time.
Yesterday, Canfor announced it would indefinitely close the plywood plant in Ft. Nelson, throwing more than 300 people out of work. The workers averted the shut down of this plant earlier this year when they agreed to take a 10% roll back on wages. The closure is expected to take effect at the end of this month.
