Prince George, B.C.- The second last decision made by the outgoing Council for the City of Prince George, was to  give the  Regional  Performing Arts Centre Society $115,000 for  the next phase of its work.

The money includes:

  • $15 thousand left over from the first phase,
  • $15 thousand  surplus left over from In Kind contribution to 2008 B.C. Games
  • $60 thousand from Council's 2008 New program Contingency Fund

and the  $25 thouand dollar balance would come from the 2009 budget with the source of funds to be identified during budget discussions.

The next phase  has the  Society  going through the  Public-Private Partnership screening and identifying a site.

The final decision   for this Council was to adjourn, and that  happened at 6:15pm.

Referendum, referendum, referendum.

PLEASE
Wonder how much of this will go to pushing for an new performing center instead of operation costs?
Fix the roads!
"The next phase has the Society going through the Public-Private Partnership screening and identifying a site."

In THIS case common sense did NOT prevail. This should NOT be moving forward at this time. I repeat....at this time. In this economic climate....we'd better get our priorities straight!

I agree, a REFERENDUM is in order! And I would be absolutely shocked if it passed............
Exactly..... Fix the roads! Now there's a novel idea!!!! And there are so many others..... lol
What an underhanded move by the outgoing council! This is exactly the kind of cronyism that marred the Old Council.
"The next phase has the Society going through the Public-Private Partnership screening and identifying a site. "

For $115 large, make a few phone calls and pick a location from only a few possibilities anyway.

I can do that...send me the cheque.

Overall, I would consider myself a supporter of the arts but this is not something this city needs right now. What we need are roads that don't destroy your alignment, maybe sidewalks that don't have huge crevices in them? I don't know...just some ideas.
I agree with you Spring. I do not agree with the City bailing out the "arts". User pay. I'm still unhappy about the City bailing out the Symphony Orchestra to the tune of $200,000 of taxpayers money. How many households had to pay for that?

Not appropriate in a city the size of P.G.
you need to spend 115k to find a site..... duh, wouldn't it be downtown. Take over the block where the Bus burned down, the city already owns over half of it with the DPC. It should be a no brainer.

Makes you wonder if the PAC wants it so bad, they can taste it. but they come to the tax payers. If it is so badly needed, why can't they raise their own money for the study.

What the heck is Peter Crolow doing in that position. He couldn't even run his own company.
Will someone send me the "how to" on how to find out who, under the Freedom of Information Legislation, is personally benefitting by this largesse. I cannot believe this City is so chronically sick in the mind....we have so many more things that are so much more important.
It seems to me that $115K is money well spent if it means getting all of the necessary info together in order to help the citizens of PG decide if they want to invest in a 50M dollar facility. Isn't that what due dilligence is all about? Isn't that what we would normally demand of the City or the government before moving ahead with spending the dough on a major facility?

I sure as heck want to know more about the exact details of the proposal before casting my vote in a referendum on the issue.
I would be happy with a City Council that could fix the roads, make my turds go away, end a large portion of poverty by closing casinos, put the people in jail who give drugs to children and force the people in jail to earn their keep. Other than that, the private sector will make sure the other things run smoothly.
supertech,

your belief that the private sector will make sure other things run smoothly is exactly why the world is in this bloody pickle!!!

Alan Greenspan thought the same way until just recently...we gotta step to the plate as a municipal govt and govern....not stand on the sidelines and watch the world go by...Bennett did it in the early thirties!!!
NMG, I already know how I'm going to vote...NO
We can t even get enough f'n doctors and nurses to run our hospital, but hey we need the friggin art center,50 million what a joke!
There must be a referendum on this project. Could anyone please post how the council voted?

You don't really think that after spending all of this study money, that the city will deny this bottom of the priority list bottomless money pit project . Do you?
