Bright Spots in the Sky

Thanks to the Opinion250 reader who sent along these photos of Jupiter and Venus beside the crescent moon.  The photos were taken  between 5:04 and 5:15 p.m. Monday.

Prince George, B.C.- So you want to know what the bright lights were in last evening’s South West sky ?

Well, Jupiter and Venus were putting on a nice show along with a crescent moon.

While the two planets look close together, they are actually very far apart.

The moon is about 250 thousand miles from Earth, Venus is 93.2 million miles away and Jupiter is 540.3 million miles out.

The fact we can see them at all with the naked eye is amazing!

The crane that is on the site for the Duchess Park  School construction   seems to point to the  moon

Nice photo. Good work on the part of the photographer!
I saw this last night and it WAS amzing!
As usual,I didn't have my camera!
Bummer!
Second star on the right and straight on till morning!

Gorgeous photo :) I wish my camera could make night shots look that great. Nice work!
I agree beautiful pics, well done. I have a question though and maybe a reader can help me out? Why do the planets and cresent moon appear so bright? and why could we see them with the naked eye? I look at the stars alot in my backyard and those stars are not usually any brighter than the rest of the stars, not are they usually so prominent in the night sky. Why could i see those planets so clearly last night as opposed to any other night? Thanks in advance.
Beautiful shot? What camera was used?
Highlander my guess would be that it was a cloudless night that was really cold and the cold takes the moisture out of the air reducing the deflection of light with less atmosphere? Thats would be my guess.

Most of the newer digital cameras will take night shots like that, you just have to know which settings to use.
