Prince George, B.C.- It has been nearly a year since the New Hope Society opened its doors at the former  Baldy Hughes base west of Prince George.
The plan is to provide people with a longer term opportunity to   deal with their addictions.   The project is the work of former MLA Lorne Mayencourt and is based on the work being done in Italy.
Speaking on the Meisner program on CFISFM  this morning, Mayencourt talked about the first year of the recovery centre's work.
Right now, the average stay at the site is about 6 months.  During that time, residents are first encouraged to get their grade 12 diploma, then the focus is on life skills training, three months of vocational training and involvement in the work at the community. “Under the supervision of a qualified person, everyone here has hung drywall or done electrical work, they’ve all be part of the growth” says Mayencourt.
The length of stay offers residents a better chance of success in fighting their addictions. Kenny is one of those success stories.  He says his five years before going to Baldy Hughes he had chosen the wrong friends, the wrong drugs, “I came from a very good family, I just got in with the wrong people” He came to the Baldy Hughes community in January of last year when it first opened. He is now the community’s Facilities Manager.  “I am going to stay here and give back to the community, I want to do whatever I can to help out.”
Kenny is hopeful people will donate old skates or hockey equipment so they can play some hockey, “I used to play a lot of rep hockey in my younger days, so I would like to see if we can get on the ice out here and have a game our two” sports and team efforts are a key to the healing.
Mayencourt says there are 15 people at the site now along with 5 staff.   The finishing touches are being put on 2 dormitories so they can take up to 100 people.
“We have been very warmly welcomed by the people of Prince George” says Mayencourt “We have received tremendous support from businesses and local agencies.”
Mayencourt says over the past year, they have been developing new programs and have been in talks with the Prince George Regional Corrections Centre “They tell us they have people who will be released soon but need some life skills training so they are better prepared to rejoin society.”
For Mayencourt, it’s all about serving the community “I just really believe passionately that we should be doing something about addictions, mental health problems and homelessness.” His work is paying off “Over the past year I have seen a tremendous change in people.”

What is the source of funding for this project?

I understand that NHA has never been involved. Does anyone know why?
Is there a contact email or phone number so that if we can gather up hockey equipment we can get it to them?
Yeah I have some gear and sticks I could donate. I don't mind giving to people when its a hand up and not a hand out.
There is a solid reason why I live in this city and it is the show of hands with respect to getting something done.
Thank you all for your offers of skates and sticks for Baldy Hughes.
If you would e-mail me off line where to pick this gear up, I’ll see that it gets there. If you wish to put your name on the items I will tell the folks at Baldy Hughes, if not, thank you.
We always hear that people are negative, I say not a chance.

Thank you again.

Maybe you could arrange for a drop off spot for the hockey gear. I could donate my old skates but I don't think anyone wants to come to Mackenzie to get them :-)
How do people apply to volunteer at Baaldy Hughes?
Nice to see a turn around in the attitude of people in relation to this facility. I can recall the negative posts when it was first announced that his facility would be developed at Baldy Hughes.

The NHA is probably only involved from the point of view of checking food services and water quality.
Good post Gus. I remember the negative posts as well. Somehow this was Campells way of cleaning up Vancouver before the Olympics I recall. This should become a community effort. It is local and we can see the results which is important. Governments throw billions at these problems with little results. This may be the model going forward that actually does something.
Some of the support for this facilitie comes from the Vancouver Foundation, which I understand is some sort of charititable organization. I suspect that the clients are on welfare and a portion of their welfare goes to the New Hope Society to offset costs.

Mayencourt was a Liberal MLA when this project was started, however he resigned and ran as a Conservative in the last Federal Election and lost.

His connection with the Liberal Government, and the Vancouver Foundation, along with the timing of the project and the location, leads some people to beleive that it is part of an overall effort to clean up the streets of Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen.

The Hospital just closed down the treatment facilitie at PGRH stating that the 28 day model was not producing the desired results, and that a 90 day walk in ;program with councelling would be more beneficial, this of course is contrary to the program offered at New Hope, which you may recall when they started was to be a three year program.

To compare this facilitie to the one in Italy is a bit of a stretch. As the one in Italy has a large number of resident doctors, along with numberous programs, and is located in a part of Italy that has support from a large population in the area.

The Prince George Correctional Centre presently releases prisoners early if they go to Activators, or St. Patricks halfway house. These facilities are paid by the Federal and Provincial Government for every prisoner that stays their, and this over time becomes part of their operating income, and also reduces the overloading of the prisons. Whether these people acutally get proper treatment and are re-introduced into society is a question that is open to debate.

It seems that New Hope is going to tap into this type of funding.

Lets look a this facility a year or two after the Next election and the Olympics and see how it is doing.
