Chetwynd, B.C. – The man who died in an avalanche Sunday near Chetwynd has been identified as 45 year old Harold Keith Waldner , from Rycroft Alberta.
He was one of several snowmobilers caught in the avalanche Sunday afternoon.
While five were caught in the slide, Waldner was already dead when other members of his group were able to dig him out. The other four survived the slide.
The remaining snowmobilers were forced to leave Waldner’s body behind as they went for help, as they feared for their safety.
The avalanche was estimated to be two to three metres deep and 2/3 of a kilometre long.
Waldner’s body was recovered from the scene on Monday.
