Highway 16 to get Upgrades in Spring
By 250 News
New Hazelton, B.C.- Two sections of Highway 16 in the northwest will see resurfacing this spring and summer.
In all, 52 kilometres of the highway will be resurfaced at a cost of nearly $5 million. The first project involves a 35 km section west of New Hazelton from Boulder Creek West to Carnaby Road. The second is a 17.5 km section from Tower Street to Wakefield Road, east of Telkwa. The work will involve hot in place recycled asphalt to preserve the pavement.
BulkleyValley-Stikine Liberal MLA Dennis MacKay says the road work should extend the life of the highway sections another 8 to 12 years.
"Highway 16 is a vital route for our communities, providing access for goods and services as well as our residents and
visitors. These sections were showing signs of deterioration so I'm pleased we are addressing this concern and improving safety."
ARC Asphalt Recycling Inc. of Kamloops won the contract with a bid of $4,927,667. Work is scheduled to begin April 15 and will be completed by July 19 of this year.
Drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes with single lane alternating traffic.
