Victoria, B.C. -  As Prince George and other B.C. residents get set to watch the big game today, the province's Minister of Healthy Living and Sport says people should take a look at their snack menu and include some healthier options.  Today is also the kickoff to Heart Health Month, and Mary Polak says people should put some heart healthy foods into their celebrations.

“It’s the small simple changes we make that can have a tremendous impact on our health so I would encourage everyone hosting a SuperBowl party to offer guests some healthy food choices."

The statistics are staggering.  Over 4,400 British Columbians die each year from cardiovascular disease, as well as many more who are affected through related complications and conditions:

·        More than 2,100 people die of heart attacks (myocardial infarction) annually in B.C..

·        More than 700,000 people in B.C. have been treated for hypertension, which is the main cause of a stroke.

·        More than 6,000 British Columbians experience a stroke each year, and approximately 2,000 die each year from stroke-related conditions.

Bobbe Wood, president and CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, says there are healthier options available for people to eat at home and at resaurants.

“We have a number of restaurants on board serving healthier items through the Health Check BC Dining Program, which is the result of a successful partnership between government and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon."

Wood suggests items like vegetarian pizzas with low-fat cheese, and whole wheat quesadillas along with vegetables and dip for your SuperBowl party.
