Prince George -   The Mackenzie campus of College of New Caledonia is launching  a 4th class Power Engineering course in an effort to help laid off forestry and mill workers use the current downtime to improve their qualifications.

The unique course will focus on the theory portion of power engineering and is primarily intended for individuals with documented firing time, but without the required classroom time.

The 20-week course runs February 16 to June 10 and will enable students to be successful when writing the BC Safety Authority 4th Class Power Engineer exam.

Registration is open to anyone interested in relocating to the community to pursue this educational opportunity.  Displaced forestry workers have been able to access funding for their educational pursuits through the CDT Tuition Assistance Fund and Skills Development Employment Fund.

Individuals interested should contact their local Employment Assistance Service.

20 weeks?
That is only half the time required to get a 4th class. You need firing time to write all the exams, which is why the 4th class course in Prince George is 10 months full time.
I agree with northtown.

I took this course and it was 10 months long and a very demanding course.
That is why the course is primarily intended for those people who have firing time. Not really for the folks who have no firing time.
CNC is doing the same thing as we speak since October to get ones 3rd all class time no real fire time ... i know a couple of guys that just did their 4ths last year that are doing it ...thinking they will get their 3rds right quick ... wrong... Pat seems to think that he can give the people 6 months ...still requiring the people another 18 months of real work... Maybe .. I dont agree with it ... the course has dumbed down alot since I took it 11 years ago to co-enside with the trades agreement with Alberta, can say i am big fan of that either.

The funny thing is though ... its focused towards displaced mill workers with documented fire time ...but if you worked in the steam plant at the pulp mills even pushing broom in the Pulp mill you would a 4th minimum ... the hot oil kiln driers at a saw mill maybe not so much ...I can see alot of BS on the paperwork .... sounds like the College and others are taking advantage that there is presently no Inspector in the region (untill he completes his 1st)
