Prince George, B.C. -   Gas prices in Prince George are on the way up.
Tuesday, the price of a liter of regular was 88.9 cents at stations in the city. By Wednesday afternoon, the price was up 4 cents a liter at some, and 8 cents a liter at others.
At 5th and Carney, the Shell and Petro Canada stations are offering a liter of gas at 96.9 but at 5th and the bypass, the Esso had boosted the price to 92.9.
Meantime, in the Hart, the Esso at Austin Road is offering a liter of regular at 96.9 , the same price as the Petro Can across the street.
The Super Save Gas Station on Victoria  was  selling its regular  for 92.9.
All this, when the price of a barrel of sweet crude closed a  $35.94 US on Wednesday .
According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Gas Gouge meter, the price of 96.9 is 20.5 cents too high. The meter indicates the price in Prince George should be 75 cents a liter. That is still well below the weekend price of 88.9 cents.

I thought maybe that was Campbell's carbon tax increase?
Isn't that supposed to be happening about now?
I think there's some price gouging going on here. I know our Canadian dollar is quite low, but so is a barrel of crude. It's at its lowest point in the past 6 months, and wasn't it just a 6 or 7 weeks ago that the price at the pump was 76.9?

Time for another investigation. If everybody reading this forum, chips in a few dollars, pays my wages for the next 3 months, I guarantee that I will get to the bottom of this. I will leave no stone unturned, and report back to you my findings.
Your funny, beesknees. We need more like you on this site.
Just heard the price of gas in Vancouver is 97.9 ..one cent more than here and they have a 7 cent transit tax on their fuel...so yep were getting it big time.
In my opinion..legalized theft by the fuel companies , condoned by the federal and provincial government because they are getting their share....
They are gouging us. The medis reported just last week that the average price of a litre of gasoline across Canada was .689
while good old PG was at .889
metalman.
Time to start another gas corporation.
So, what do we do about it? Like the passive Canadians we are we WILL sit back and moan but do absolutely nothing about it. Who ever goes down to the Council meetings? I have gone 3 times now with no back up from anyone. So I ask again, what do we do about it? NOTHING!
Good question Shellshadow...If you have any ideas I would sure like to hear them. I believe the federal and provincial governments are into this right up to their political necks and are profittting from each and every increase, so they don't care..easy money for doing nothing...and they will turn it down, I don't think so.
Our vehicles won't run on water, yet, transit is available, but of no use to me, doesn't run on my schedule....
Boycotting in Canada doesn't hurt the gas companies, much, if any...
anyone want to bet gas prices, at the pump, are over $1.oo by Easter
Olympics
Get in touch with your MP!! I did. He replied by sending me an email listing an internet site that gives the price at the pumps in BC. I'll bet he fisured he had sone a good job of representing the citizens of Prince George by doing that. Made me wonder if he got a kickback from the inflated prices.
I agree with BCRacer, The feds and province has there grubby little fingers in the pie. We are being taxed. the Oil companies are not making all the money, a lot of the pump tolls got to be taxes, in one form or another.
I do not know BCRacer. Maybe get to gether and start hanging out at various gas stations in town with signs. Maybe that would get some news hounds out and get some publicity. Maybe more and more people would stand up with us. We have to start somewhere, somehow, soon. I am willing if others want to do something. Does anyone else have any ideas?
No question, the gas prices in PG are a rip-off.
Maybe the oil companies new accounting measures are inverse. As the price of a barrel of oil decreases, the price of gasoline increases. I guess it will get much better in the future as oil prices increase, the price of gasoline should decrease. Wait till we get hit with Gordo's carbon tax increase. That will add a few more coins to the bill at the pump.
Just wait till the spring/summer driving season hits, add in the usual long weekend increase and we will be back paying $1.25 per litre again.
Sort of on topic.
I watched on the Discovery Channel a couple of weeks ago a program about the Arctic ice melting giving way to explore the oil and natural gas reserves.

Here is an article I found that explains a bit about it:

I'm sure if you went on the Discovery website you may find it. I'm a better listener than explainer. :)

To all you readers out there you need to what read Gordon Campbell's up to. Visit Justshutupbc.com This takes affect as of tommorrow. It's all up to you friends.
The last time we payed nearly $1.00 for gasoline, crude oil was probably selling for 80-90 dollars a barrel not $35. Clearly the time has come for an investigation into this blatant robbery.
if this justshutupbc.com limits the number of pro labor commercials such as the teachers - its about the children (it just so happens we will get a raise and do less work) or the nurses - its about the patients (it just so happens we will get a raise and do less work) then I am thrilled. For teachers and nurses its about teachers and nurses. That just makes them like everyone else, but at least everyone else doesnt pretent its for the good of the people. I want more money because I want more money!
Haha, well said Born in BC. I often wonder how many people actually buy into those commercials.
I bought gas last week and when I told them that maybe I should only buy $20.00 as with the price of crude going down the gas should go down. I was told to fill up my tank as there was a big jump in the price due.
I watch global news at lunch time and price/barrel went down again today.
Yeah what gives. Never mind 92.9 how about 96.9 on the Hart and Austin Rd. The barrel is sitting at $35.36 and gas goes up 8 cents p/l.

Gas from Quesnel to 100 Mile House ranges from 82.9 to 84.9 Might as well get rid of that refinery here and get rid some of the stink seeing it doesn't save us any money for short deliveries. Greed and gouging has to stop!

Still can't figure that one out $35 per barrel! Watch out if it ever climbs $140.00 again you can look at $4.00 p/l and they will use the excuse that the barrel has risen in price.
gordon needs the money for his big olympic screw up.
And what are we going to do about it? Nothing! Because big oil can charge what ever they want for fuel and we'll pay their price, we have no choice. There is no competition because there is no competition, big oil owns them all They're just a bunch of greedy, gouging scum. 4 billion per quarter isn't enough profit for them.
Driving into Quesnel this morning the price was up 12 cents a liter sitting at .969
I wrote to Dick Harris our conservative MP and complained about fuel price gouging because before election day
You said it, polar. The Olympics will be a millstone around the necks of the B.C. taxpayer for years to come. Of course, that has nothing to do with Big Oil Inc. gouging. Big Oil is in it for profit, that is why they exist. I just wish that they were a little more fair in pricing.
metalman.

I wrote to Dick Harris our conservative MP and complained about fuel price gouging because before election day I said they would earn my vote by putting a stop to price gouging, they sent me some election promises and gouging was included. The govt. should be held accountable on promises but we all know it will never happen.

I also wrote to Shell oil about price gouging when the price per barrel is at $35 per barrel and no sign of going up in the near future. These oil companies rob us blind without holding a gun to our heads and the govt. is letting it happen.

The oil companies are no better than the Wall St. bankers with billions of $ in bonuses
Shell at 5th and Tabor....was 96.9....just went by there 09/feb/12 (3:30 pm) and they have lowered it to 88.9....someone gouged and then got smart I think....
I Call it the Afghan War Tax,
I know of guy that owns the Bon voyage
Esso station. Esso sent him a gas barbeque to raffle off on customer appreciation day. He liked it so much he took it home, and then when out and purchased a cheaper one. With slugs like that what do you expect?
First: the price will be what the market will bear, if you drive you will pay no matter what the cost.

Second: if "we" started our own petro company, "we" would be forced by the other outfits to come in line with their pricing

Third: the price of gas is NOT directly related to the price of crude today, it is based on the price of a barrel 3 or 4 months ago AND see first.

If you really object to the price of gas, DO NOT use a petroleum fueled vehicle!
I know there will be those that say "oh my, I can't ride a bike in the winter," and still others that will say "oh my, I will not ride a bike because it is too strenuous or too much like work."
We need to not just encourage but demand alternatives to petroleum based vehicles.
As long as there is no viable alternative, we will be held hostage by big oil.

Not to worry, the oil will run out sooner rather than later. In our lifetime actually. Then we will not have to pay exorbitant prices for petroleum fuel. We will get gauged by the next fuel supplier. It may just be BC Hydro.
If you call it the Afghan war tax then you've been sipping to much Liberal propaganda.
Loki, your explanation for the price of gas is not realistic. It does not take 3 or 4 months for a gas station to go through it's stock of gasoline. I'm quite tired of holier then though people trying to explain away the high cost of gasoline. I accept that the prices will be high now, I do not accept that when crude oil is 140 per barrel we are told gas will be high, then when it is 35 per barrel we are given a completely different excuse as to why it is high. Since we can't do without it it's time the government started investigating why we are being gouged.
The Canadian dollar is also dropping in value compared to the US dollar and when you buy a commodity priced in US dollars that means you are paying more for the same thing which means that prices will go up.
NMG, when the $ was at par with the US $ and the math was done with the variance of US gal verses Imp. gal. the price was still a buck more per gal. So please do you're math before trying to make excuses for the gouging oil companies.
NMG how did we ever afford gas when our dollar was .69 cents?
Esso and PetroCan on 20th still at 88.9.....
"NMG, when the $ was at par with the US $ and the math was done with the variance of US gal verses Imp. gal. the price was still a buck more per gal"

Our gas is taxed much more heavily than in the US. It's also taxed much less than most places in the rest of the world. In case you haven't noticed, the price of gas in the US or in Europe has virtually no bearing on the price we pay in Canada so to make such a comparison is useless.

"So please do you're math before trying to make excuses for the gouging oil companies"

I suggest you do the math to see what impact a decreasing Canadian dollar has when it comes to purchasing products sold in US dollars. I'll give you a hint, it makes them more expensive.

"NMG how did we ever afford gas when our dollar was .69 cents"

We were able to afford it because we had enough money to pay the price that was being asked at the time, much like ANY product.

There's nothing quite like rising gas prices to bring out the same ole sob stories. Heck, I remember Ben harping on gas prices back in the day when he was on 550. One would think that after beating a dead horse for that many years, that people would realize their efforts are futile, LOL. Move on people. You are going to kill yourself worrying about this issue, one that is COMPLETELY out of your control.
NMG not sure it is out of our control...

The reality is if something isn't done to cap fuel prices/gouging you will see a further economic crippling occur. You will see the return of fuel surcharges, the Tourism industry will take a further beating because no one will travel. I was planning on going away for a week but now I am not so sure I should spend my discretionary income on travel. I am reconsidering. I am now of the belief I should sock that money away to help insulate me from the further rise in cost of living.

In the short-term perhaps but over the long-term I completely disagree. What WILL happen though, at least in my opinion, is that trucks will only be bought by people who use them as trucks and the market for SUV's will shrink while the market for cars will increase. In short, it will be just like the old days when cars were used to move people and trucks were used to move goods, supplies and trailers.

We saw this exact trend not more than 6 months ago when the market reacted to high gas prices almost overnight. People were trading in trucks and SUV's like they were full of toxic matter. Sure people will get pinched in the short-term with high gas prices, but eventually things will balance out and people will adjust their habits. It also wouldn't hurt if auto makers started bringing more diesel engines over to North America, like they sell in other markets (even OUR auto makers).

Why is it that the rest of the world can manage with high gas prices but people in North America seem to be "crippled" by low gas prices (comparatively speaking)?
Can't compare Canada to Europe - too many differences.
Anyways I think the automakers - those that are in financial trouble need to get it together and supply vehicles that are more efficient - NMG is correct the vehicles in Europe are much, much more efficient.
Then I saw an add that GMis building a Hybrid SUV - but it is in the Cadillac Escolade - how many of those do you think they will sell
The automakers need to get on board
