Prince George, B.C.- There is a new policy in place for City staff when it comes to using any kind of communication device while using City equipment, or on City business.

The policy calls on employees to wait until they have an opportunity to stop the equipment, or in the case of driving, pull over to the side of the road, to answers calls.
The policy will apply to cell phones, radios, pagers, blackberries any kind of communication device.
Administration says it has researched the effect mobile communication device usage has on drivers and has found that:

• 73% of drivers now use mobile communication devices.
• Drivers’ visibility is hampered by cell phone and hands-free units.
• The reaction time of drivers who use such devices is slowed by 18%.
• Driver distraction impairs awareness, decision making, and overall driver performance.
• Distracted drivers are more likely to run traffic lights.
• Distracted drivers are four times more likely to have accidents.

Under the policy, City employees are prohibited from making, receiving or checking messages on mobile communications. When placing calls, the employee must first safely pull off the roadway and come to a complete stop. Incoming calls must go to voice mail, to be retrieved and responded to when the employee is not driving.

The two-way radio may be used to inform a driver that they should phone when safe to do so. Two-way radio messages must be kept as brief as possible.

When available, passengers may take or send calls.

The only exception would be if an employee must make an emergency call (911) the vehicle should be pulled safely to the side of the road out of traffic.

The policy will apply to all City staff and others who may be operating City owned equipment and vehicles, including those using personal vehicles on City related business.

This is a good move.
metalman.
I agree great move, now lets do this for all the other people out there driving around with a cell phone attached to their ears.
I completely agree BCRacer!!
Let's hope they get after all the truck drivers that are on their phones too.
I have driven my vehicle when I have had one too many beers, and I have driven my vehicle while talking on my cell phone, and I am a way more dangerous driver when I am on the cell phone. Imagine combining the two!

Maybe it's because I'm a male, but multi-tasking driving and a cell phone is really dangerous for me. I'm only a few years away from retirement and have never been in a vehicle accident, but that cell phone is more dangerous than drinking and driving in my experience!

LOL Yama....
Have you tryed texting while driving Yama? I recomend trying this then comparing it to having a couple beer then driving.
So who is going to police this. Is the supervisor going to follow a worker and see if he picks up his cell phone?

It is one thing to make up rules, it is another to implement it and make it work. Or is this one of the feel good moves.

What is the reprimand? your bad boy, don't do that.
If they only had access to pay phones, we'd have to give these city workers a pocket full of quarters fer the pay phone. It's a no win.
good plan but how to enforce it and if they do get caught what kind of punishment will they recive
No one is saying they can't use cell phones!...just get of the flippin road when you do....sheeesh
Some city workers can't drive anyway, pull out in front of you on 18th from the snow dump and drive 20 kph towards Ospika. Idle through the light and everyone stacked up behind misses it. Maybe he was talking on his cell phone and couldn't shift up.
Remember back when we didn't have cell phones and we didn't have to account for our whearabouts every instance? I kind of get that warm feeling.....aahh thats it, it's coming to me now there it is .....It was called FREEDOM. Just try this once and you'll see what I mean....Leave home without your loving phone one day, and tell everyone you're going out alone without that wonderful thing that I call My Personal Tracking Device, and just see how up-lifting you feel without it, not having to always be held accounted for andon guard to listen for the stupid thing.....aaahhh
